Am I asking for too much?

Damn, that is some nice paint! If I were you I'd keep it. You're already going to lose your shirt, so it won't do you any good to drive an "economy car" instead. That Civic hatchback isn't much more practical, and it's as average as they come.
944s make great daily drivers. Just because you love it doesn't mean it can't get out in the rain.

Jimmy, gorgeous car and great maintenance! Unfortunately, you can't charge people for what you put into it.
I'd follow the others' advice, and lower to $13,999, if you have the time to wait.
We are a strange group, with how much we love these cars. You might also want to list it here on Rennlist, in the non-members area.

Just an addendum. Location has a lot to do with prices too. A car that will sell for $10,000 in Miami is going to sell for $12,000 in Crooked Fork, Wyoming or some far off place. Big cities tend to have tons of competition in the used car market so if you dont live in a big city, you should expect to receive a premium (however big or small) in your area. If someone wants to fly to Miami to look at a car instead of yours and jump over a dollar to save a couple dimes, let him. Someone will come along who values his personal time aggessively and cannot afford to go on wild goose chases. Every second away from the office is money potentially lost. Theyll factor that in and realize spending an extra 6 weeks looking will actually cost them more in $/hr eyeballing the for sale ads and taking test drives than it would be to cut bait and buy your car.
Id also put an ad in on Rennlist. Target the local PCA mailer and put an ad in that. Someone who likes to go to car shows and the like should be interested in your car and be willing to pay a premium for it.
And above else, if you dont think you are getting what you deserve for it, dont sell it. Market values are nothing but averages. You are the one who owns the car so you know more about it than anyone else on earth. The car is worth whatever price you place on it. End of story. People would probably not offer me $14K for mine. I wouldnt even return a phone call for $14K. I dont want anyone elses 951 b/c Im driving the one I like. If that describes you, Id keep the car!

i do agree though that your asking price is a bit too high; i also think if you hold out you will get a buyer who will pay what you expect from the car.

Beautiful. Just Beautiful. Would $2,000 take it?
In all seriousness that is an excellent example. Your asking price may be a bit high, yet I believe if you have the time to wait about you could sell it at that price point.
Best Wishes,
Sach

Joseph-
Point well taken. I think in a rural area, the higher price will be found, but youll have to wait on it longer than a guy selling his in Chicago where he has 5 voicemails on his car by 9am.
My philosophy is, if you love the car and dont think youll a) get out of it what you put into it, and b) wont find another like it youll enjoy as much, and c) arent hard pressed for the cash right away, then d) keep it and enjoy.

It looks beautiful. I'll tell you what happened to me, you can draw your own conclusions.
I put mine up for sale a month ago until I changed my mind. Had an ad in Autotrader, my web site, etc. I got a number of nibbles but no bites. Mine was -nearly- as nice as yours looks to be, and only 93000 miles. I had it up for 10,500. I had inquiries from Miami, Atlanta, and New York (I'm in Minnesota).
I think I could have gotten my price too, but I would have had to wait awhile. And waiting, I decided I couldn't bear to part with it.
Vroom!

Wow. I can't believe the number of responses I've got in just a few hours. I really appreciate your honest opinions.
By the way - AndyK, when I said I have $16,500 (at least) invested in it, I meant buying price plus what I put into it. Not 16,000 on top of what I paid for it. It's actually probably closer to $18,000 - I'm just too scared to sit down and add up the reciepts. Now If I add up the receipts I have from me and the PO (under 10,000 miles between the two of us) then it would definitely exceed 16K.
So here's what I am going to do:
1 - lower the price to $13,950
2 - Place an ad on Rennlist (how do I do that?)
3 - If there are still no good bites, then in 3 weeks I will stick it up on ebay and put an honest reserve on it. If it doesn't sell, then I hope the exposure will help sell it.
I just remembered it also has an new oilpan with less than 6000 miles on it. I'll have to put that on the web page when i change the price.
Why am I selling it? Well - it's just not practical for me. It's scary when the turbo spools up on a rainy day (got caught out in Florida afternoon thunderstorms 2 times), I never drive it (I do a lot of driving for work). I'm paranoid about parking it anywhere (I'm usually the guy parked waaaaaay out at the back of the parking lot). I can't tell you how many times I've bumped my head getting into and out of the car (which is a chore in itself). And it's the hardest car I've EVER worked on. To be honest, I just don't love the car like I thought I would.
I want to sell it by the middle of August (3 week vacation to Germany - can anyone guess which factory we'll be visiting?) But if it doesn't sell by then, it'll have to wait until we get back. Once I get back, I'll be selling the civic and buying something a bit bigger and newer.
By the way, how important do you think a good stereo is? I love the stereo I have in the Porsche and am tempted to buy something used on ebay that's not worth as much, and swap it out. That way I'll also not be losing as much on the sale. What do you think?
Again thank you all so much for your input.
JC

Unless you are selling it to an audiophile (who probably wouldn't want a 944 anyway) I doubt the stereo will have any impact on the overall sale of the vehicle or it's value.

I agree regarding the stereo. I don't think that an expensive one will add to the eventual selling price. Having one which works would be better than having one that doesn't (or none at all, with a hole in the dash), but you won't get your money back for it. I would think that anyone test driving the car will do so with the stereo off, so they can listen for engine or other noises. Once they are happy after the test drive, they may turn on the stereo just to see if it works, but that will probably be about it.
Good luck,
Tom

P.S.: Looks like you are now going to have to give up your rennlist user name. I wonder whether "Civic" is already taken...
