Post Camshaft Sprocket Removal Question Help!!!!

I am in the middle of my timing and balance shaft belt replacement on my 86 944 n/a. along with all seals and rollers being replaced. Everything is off except for the camshaft sprocket.

How on earth do I remove the camshaft sprocket? I have removed the rotor. Now what. Do I remove the large nut? and then use a puller?

Please help!!! It's 105 degrees here in Chico, CA and Im sweating bullets trying to get this thing off.

Thanks.

Nick

You hold the gear or sprocket with I think a 32mm end wrench and with a 1/2" breaker bar and I think a 12 point hex socket undo the bolt that can be seen by looking at the end of the cam shaft or the center of the gear. When replacing this bolt you need to use locktite. After removing the bolt you may have to use a gear puller. Also pay attension to the key and keyway for reasemble.

I have tryed this and it has loosened the bolt a little bit, but now it just spins around freely both ways. Either I have stripped something or I am just not doing it right.

Bolt just spins freely.

No clue what to do now.

Everyone always leaves out a few steps. I monkeyed with mine for a while.

Once you get the cap and rotor off, there is a small 8mm bolt that needs to be removed from the side of the cam. This releases the center peice the rotor screws into. (the extention on the end of the cam is this part, and actually not part of the cam.) You may need to use some penetrant on it to get the insert out of the cam, but a rag and pliers can help twist it out. Once that part is out, you can see the 12pt bolt that is down in there. Remove the bolt and tap off the sprocket.

I can take pics tonight if needed.

Thanks for the help!

I thought there was a hex nut in there somewhere, but couldnt figure out how to get the rotor shaft out. It took some lubricant and some prying, but I got it out.

As you can see I am searching the forum...

Can I get more details on this? Photos of how the parts look like?

I have been trying to remove the sprocket with no luck. How many parts in there?

And yes, I removed the cap, rotor, bolt that holds the 32mm part to the extension???

I tried using a puller and the thing only came off 2mm... what do I need to twist? I am afraid I got the tip of the camshaft out of round with the puller... I hope that is a separate piece that can be replace... I can't see PET because the computer that I have it on has no monitor at this time...

Happy New Year!!!!!!

Once you have the rotor extension out, look in the center of the cam and there will be a 12mm cheesehead. (I think it was 12mm) Use a 32mm wrench to hold the cam while you remove that bolt. Once the bolt is out, a puller will slide off the 32mm nut thing and the sprocket. There is a woodruff key in there as well that may hang up, but it is rare. If it is slow going or it hangs, use a rubber mallet to push the sprcket assembly back on, and then remove with the puller. Repeat if needed to dislodge the sprocket.

With the thing the rotor sits on removed (6mm hex head bolt), look inside the cam sprocket (along the
axis of the cam) and you'll see a bolt head in there that has to be removed. You'll need a triple square tool to remove it.

Please, that would help a lot...

I just finished installing PET (thanks Ribs!!) and will look at the parts breakdown to try to figure this out...

At this time I am having problems removing the rotor extension... Will try again a let you know if it came out... one more part to buy (I damaged the #@%$ part and is now out of round and the rotor cap will no longer fit...) All this to get to the seal back there... I am positive (with all the trouble I have gone through) that the seal has never been changed...

The rotor connecting piece is a tight fit in the carrier part. (As you already know) I destroyed one of these removing it myself. Suggestion.... heat up the carrier piece using a torch (carefully!), use a padded vice grip, and good luck! Once removed, you can remove bolt holding sprocket on. Note: older model(s) ('83) uses a allen head bolt instead of cheesehead bolt. If you strip out the head on either type of bolt, carefully drill head off bolt, remainder of bolt will then unscrew by hand (unless it was previously loctited in). Sprocket will then come off by prying/working off by hand, or by using a small 2 legged puller. Suggest you replace allen head camshaft bolt with the cheesehead type (per old TSB). Torque on cheesehead bolt is higher than allen bolt. HTH

Thank you Ken and Perry!!

The good news is that I got the extension out,

Bad news is that the cheesehead bolt is stripped (so the seal had been replaced in the past but the @#$^%$ mechanic did not care to put a new bolt in... @#$%$#@%).

I will drill it out but first have on of this

Thanks again!!!

Question

Another possible way of removing the connector piece from the carrier without damaging it, might be to take an old/unwanted rotor, break it apart to get the brass bushing out of it, put that on the connector piece putting the retaining screw in it, and clamp your vise grip tightly on the bushing instead of directly on the connector piece. Maybe this would work? I did'nt do this when removing mine, and consequently destroyed one piece, and slightly scarred the other. (A little late now maybe but hopefully it could help someone else?
