968 MAF on '91 944S2?? How do I make this work?
I'm thinkin' about using a 968 MAF in my '91 944S2. I assume it's not a drop-in so I wonder if I can simply replace the DME and harness with one from a 968 and make it work. Anyone tried this?

I don't see why it wouldn't work... but replacing the harness isn't exactly a novice job! I don't know some of the details on the S2. Does it have a hall sensor on the cam housing (by the exhaust)? I think everything else should hook up the same and work alright, except the fuel mapping might be off, since the S2 has a different cam profile, different intake, different size valves, and variocam.

I think the bi$%h would be the variocam settings in the 968...don't have an answer but I do have a related question...
If the AFM barn door set up is so bad (old technology) on the S2 what would be a great replacement / upgrade that :
1. would be reliable
2. be relatively easy to install
3. net me some more HP if that's possible.
Inquiring minds want to know...

Well, obviously the difference is not going to be huge; consider the difference in performance with the 968. What is it, something in the order of 20 HP, and that's not only the MAF, but also the variocam etc. (which I suspect is going to be more significant a difference anyway.) So that 20 HP puts a limit on the possible gain, and I suspect that any real gain would be a small fraction of that.
Of course, there may be subtler performance benefits through the curve, greater responsiveness in some bands etc... all possible. I just don't think AFM->MAF for an S2 is going to amount to anything like a major performance upgrade...
I'd be pleased to be proven incorrect, of course.

There are already some folks out there making use if current Bosch MAF systems specifically for the S2. Vitesse comes to mind first. I agree with Eddie. Trying to figure out the code on the 968 MAF along with the DME to wrk with the S2 would be a PITA.
I am beginning to think that a 968 motor swap in my toy would be the way to go and forget this whole idea of Spec Racing. If anyone knows of a 968 motor, harness and ECU for sale, let me know.

Althought I probably won't go to the 968 motor (assuming I can find one) until I blow the S2 I have now. The driver is still the limiting factor...
FYI the factory HP numbers are 208 for an S2 and 237 for a 968

It can be done, but why? Once you are done with the hardware, you must deal with the tuning on the chip.
We have converted the S2 AFM setup to MAF with good results. Our conversion is on the DME itself using our software, no signal massagers. Feel free to email me if you need any details.

I've got a MAF Kit in use since 2004 and it works fine.
It's built by Transaxle Tom, whome you can contact via his forum.
