Default I don't know what forum to put this in

I found a 917 for sale today on craigslist. It's a rolling chasis with no engine or tranny. The guy has a 1.8 engine for it. He's asking 800 and hopefully I'll have pictures later today or tomorrow morning.

If it's one of these, that's way too much money:

Really depends on what your plans are for the car. It would make a great sculpture for the front of a dealership, painted in period correct colors. As for a project car I don't think there are many specialist suppliers out there. Parts would be a big problem and not having the engine or transmission to rebuild would worry me if I was considering such a task. Didn't this originally have a 5L V12?

"1973 Porsche 917, This vehicle is a great for rebuild, engine is out, transmission is out, interior needs to be redone. I do not have the original engine or fuel injection parts, the engine I do have is a 1.8. Again because some cannot seem to uderstand this, vehicle is not running it will need to be towed, but it does roll on 4 great wheels."

A 73 is an open top. I'm not quite an interested in that. I would love to be able to restore something like that. I might have to rebuild it with out the original running gear. Maybe just with whatever I can figure out to use. Would be a fun project though.

There is abso-freakin-lootley no way that is a real 917 at that price.

My money is on "914", which, while being only 3 numbers different, is a whole different animal entirely.

Again another instance where a "minor" typo is really a "major" one............

You're asking me if I know the difference between a 917 and a 914?

I got intimate with the 917s at Rennsport. And had a toy one when I was a kid, I was born in 63. But the links to pics posted were of VW engine kit cars, so I was saying I would have no interest in a kit car for any amount of money, hence the 'pffffft'...

"I don't know what forum to put this in"?

How about the fairy tale forum. If this was legit, I would run (yes run! No time to drive) as fast as I could to this guy's house and chain myself to the car to make sure he didn't sell it to someone else. Just one of the wheels would be worth more than $800.

Has to be a typo (intentional?). Either he meant a 914, or he meant $800,000.

I'm guessing it's a 914 also, even the kits that need a lot of work are like 7-8k. I can always hope. For 800 for a real one I will have my dad go get it for me tomorrow. Tow it to the house. Park one of the other cars outside and get that in. It'd be a hell of a project when I get back from Iraq.

So it's this one: springfield.craigslist

It's either a kit-car, a 914 or a big price mistake, someone call him.

As it talks about a 1.8L engine I would say it was a 914 and a typo in the listing.

Well, there was a 916 which was a 914 with a flat 6 cyl engine in it. Maybe this is a 914 with a 7 cyl engine in it ?
