Default S and S2 spindle differences

I just recieved a set of 944S spindles and they are the same as the S2 spindles minus the 13mm ABS sensor hole.
BTW any Late spindle can be machined for that sensor hole, no need to splurge for extra spindles.IIRC a tone ring can be retro'ed to the late hubs as well....

As to where I heard about 87-up Turbo spindles, I emailed a guy back and forth to confirm weather my Lexus Brake kit would work and maybe he was wrong about the spreadwidth on his and assumed it was the 76mm dimension I posted for the adapter brackets....
Eventually someone with an 87-up Turbo will send me theirs to be drilled and reamed to 5/8" for the Bump-steer kit I designed.
I really appreciate everyone's knowledge here on the list. I like to get the complete story STRAIGHT before doing mods to a vehicle or bike.

O.k. sorry for the confusion. I just got an email clearing up 1 part of the story. The spindles I mic'd up with the ABS sensor were "S" spindles and not "S2" on 944Hybrids.
However I was also sent another set of supposedly "S" spindles that are exactly like a set of LATE NA spindles without the ABS sensor hole.
So S2 spindles along with 87-up Turbo spindles may just be the 94mm caliper mount bolt pattern difference.

So, is it safe to say that there are 944S cars with and without ABS?

Yep, I just roughly measured the set of N/A spindles I have in the garage, and they are 3" (76mm), and the set of 87 Turbo Calipers are approx 3 5/8" (real close to 94mm).

87-88 N/As, S's, and Turbos were available w/ and w/o the ABS option. From 89 on, ABS was standard on Turbos, S2s, and 968s, I think it was still an option on the 89 N/As (?).

Also, the non-ABS spindles and hubs can be machined and modified for ABS, but the costs of machining the hub and making the ABS pickup ring from scratch are significantly higher than buying a set of take-off spindles and hubs from someone upgrading to M030 fronts. Unless you have your own mill and lathe in the basement (which I do not), it would cost well over $200 to have those pickup rings made from round or thick walled tubing, then machining the hub bases for interference fit.

Default ABS cars

Hey oddjob, do the cars with ABS have the rings on BOTH hubs or just one side?

All sides. ABS has to be able to sense what every wheel is doing.

I believe they changed because they redesigned the control arm setup from the steel VW A1 design to the Alloy Porsche design...

Also from what I learned is that the real difference in the Brake kits is the M030/951/S2/S4 and then Stock and pre/post 87 offsets...

Finding the M030 kit is the best option; then all you need after that is the GTS Calipers and Rotors; which requires no modification...

Default BEST?

The M030 stuff is not the best option....Performance or $$$ wise... The 87-up NA spindles which are easy to get and make many different caliper adapters for are choice IMHO. When The weather breaks, I will be making a set of adapters to put RX7 4x36mm calipers on the back and will go ahead and make a set for the fronts also so I can run 15" phonie wheels in the winter. The Lexus 4x42 calps need at least 17" wheels to clear.
