I always look at NADAGUIDES for classic cars, their list is pretty good, except on options... and they always list the original MSRP for the base car...

Just wanted to clarify, that the more than $30,000 was on an 83 car that had an MSRP of somewhere in the very low $20,000s and everything over the list price was just a dealer mark up and not for extra cost options or dealer installed options.

By 89 there were N/A 2.7 944s that carried MSRPs of around $40k.

Thanks to all for the pricing, I'm really surprised. Most new cars I was interested in in '82 - '85 were around $12k - $15k -- minivans and such. Different point in my life. Still, $20k in '84 is the equivalent of almost $45k now, just using the Consumer Price Index. Think of what you'd get for that money today...

Rarity is a relative thing. Clearly 944s were not rare in terms of production or sightings the way a Ferrari or Lamborghini were back in those days. But also based on your photo showing several 951/944 Turbos or 944S2's this picture is from sometime between 1986 and 1990. It was rare to see new unsold 944s on a dealers lot from about 1983 through maybe the beginning of 85. But by 1986 and later it was very common to see several 944s (in its various forms) sitting on dealers' lots. By that time demand was no longer as strong, base prices had increased considerably, and the cars were now getting flack in magazines for being very pricey 4 cylinder cars, especially since there were less expensive cars with similar or better performance than the NA 944s.

Still, it at least in the areas that I lived in the 1980s the 944 seemed to be seen on the roads far less often than Corvettes, RX7s, ZXs etc. Futhermore, it does seem that I see far more Boxsters and 996s on the roads today, than I ever saw 944s or 3.2 Carreras on the roads back in the mid to late 80s when they were new.

For example back in 1988 951 cost here in Finland almost 700.000 Finnish mark while Golf was about 80.000 FIM. All Porsche's were available only for very rich or the people who lived for a while outside Finland and were able to bring car to Finland without the finnish car tax (third highest in the western world). For example my 1988 951 was bought by a finn who worked some years in Rockford IL. My car was sold new at Richard Lynch Porsche,Mercedes,Audi,Jaguar store. Wonder if it is still there.
During the '80's i had a five minute walking distance to the local Porsche importer (also only place in this country which sold new Porsche's back then), and while walk my golden retriever i had during that time we spent lot's of time doing some window shopping.
