Default Thoughts on transmission oil change

How often, what's recommended? Primarily street use, mild climate.

^ ^ ^ That says every 60k for a manual tranny.

Interesting, I don't think it was ever changed before I bought mine with 110k miles on it.

Still, 60k changes are cheap insurance, even if you go to a synthetic, like i did

60K is probably fair for street. I change it yearly in the race car.

OK, if everyone agrees 60K miles/100K kms is about right, how about weights and brands? Synthetics?

Do synthetics have the potential to turn minor oil leaks into major ones, as they can do on engines?

Redline MTL has been recommended here.

I use Amsoil's Severe Gear - best stuff I've put in (I have a LSD).

http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/svg.aspx

I think the book standard is Swepco 201 but others have had good luck with Royal Purple and Redline. You can search for gear oil or similar on this board and find literally dozens of threads with folks discussing the merits of various gear oils.

I've switched to Amsoil everywhere in my car - but I still use Brad Penn motor oil.

I use mobile 1 synthetic 75/90 with a LSD additive. No leaks I can see, and i check regularly on a lift.

Save the Swepco 201 for your air-cooled 914 and 911 trannys and use Redline MT90. You'll never get 100% agreement on Rennlist but about 80% of the guys here run MT-90 on there non-lsd 944 trannys.

Hmmm... I notice that the FSM says 2 litres, and Clark says 2.6 litres. The FSM suggests filling to 6-8 mm below the filler hole, Clark suggest all the way to the bottom of the filler hole. Does this account for the 0.6 litre discrepancy?

Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 (product code MTGQT) has worked very well for me. It is a GL-4 which is the spec for our cars.

Choinga - Note the Severe Gear is a GL-5 formulation not GL-4 (not sure if it makes much of a difference though).

From their site:

"Can also be used in axles where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended"
