Default X-Post: Oil Pressure question

https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...-question.html

When the car is off and cold with key "on", my oil pressure gauge is resting at 1

On cold start up (first time of the day) my oil pressure goes to ~3.5bar (idle) Within seconds it goes to 4 bar (idle) It goes to 4 with any sort of throttle.

When warm it idles at 3.3 bar, with any sort of throttle/ or at any RPM over 2.5K rpm cruising it goes to slightly above 4 bar, but no higher.

When I first put the car together, the gauge would indicate 5+ on cold startup/any sort of throttle and would go down to ~3.5bar at warm idle.

The car runs great, compression is ~150 on all 4, 20" vac at warm 850rpm idle, burns no oil, and makes no engine noises (knock on wood)

I put a new oil pressure sender in when I put the car together and I use 20W-50 oil.

I am a bit worried about the oil pressure. If the gauge is right I feel like there should be a more than 1 bar variation in pressure from cold startup, warm idle, and high rpms. If the gauge is wrong, could it display the oil pressure in a smaller, incorrect "range"? I think its really odd the gauge won't read any lower than 1 or any higher than 4...

Any thoughts? Has anyone else experienced similar behavior with their oil pressure gauge?

Can only tell you what my car does....

Cold start pressure in the 4 to 5 bar range (depends on ambient temp)

Once the car is at opperating temperature, the pressure sits around 1.8 to 2 bar at idle

On load, that will rise to about 4.5 bar....

Oil = 20W50 like yours

Engine is a very well maintained S2 3.0l with .....198,xxx miles.

Don't know if that helps at all...

Would a bit too much motor oil cause that?

I say this since I just changed my oil and I'm seeing what MM951 is seeing on my 2.5NA. Before the oil change, my numbers were like J Berk. I put in 6 quarts. Manual says 6.34 while pelican says 5.7. I went with the average and maybe it's too much. I know it's higher and thats the only change...or maybe the oil sender crapped out on me?

EDIT: Just did some reading and learned that 20W50 oil causes higher oil pressure readings. That's what I used. Maybe that's the issue with your also?

Most people make knock on boost...

It might be worth it to swap out sending units again... I've seen other parts DOA.

Why did you change the oil pressure sender? Is the new sender VDO or some aftermarket one? These senders can be faulty.

If you have external mechanical oil pressure gauge that you can plug in it would help to diagnose the problem.

You can also check if crank bolt is tightened correctly.
Did you open up the oil pump and did you remove the OPRV when you did something with your engine?
