Timing / Balance questions
Hey,
A while ago I replaced the timing and balance belts on my 968 motor. Before I did the work, the car would start immediately after I turned the key. Now, it takes a few revolutions before the car turns over. When its running, its fairly smooth. I haven't inspected anything recently and it has been a few month since I did the work, but I can verify that the TDC marks alight with the actual TDC of cylinder 1.
Are there any ideas why its more difficult to start now?
Cheers,
Jared

So, the Porsche parts guy said it sounds as if the car is "binding" while I start. When you listen to it, it sounds as if the starter is working really hard to turn the car over. I am fairly sure there is no valve interference taking place, since I hand rotated everything after the belt replacement. Could it be that the belt is too tight? I'm trying to think of reasons why initially turning the car over would be kind of hard.
Any help would be appreciated =)

Jared, the only thing I can think of is the cam is one notch off on timing. But since it aligns properly then that rules out the one notch theory. I would check wires and grounds going to the starter and the starter itself. Maybe it is not spinning fast enough.

Maybe your battery is on its last legs? Sooner or later they all die. Or maybe you didn't tension the alternator belt quite enough, not charging completely. Could also be the starter has come loose.

If the cam belt is way too tight for some reason that could make the engine hard to turn over, as you are trying to break off the exhaust cam snout and ruin the water pump as well as start the car.
