S2 with broken belt value?
What would be a good price on an S2 with a broken t belt be. And how much am I looking at on parts if I repair it myself? Never pulled an S2 head before, is it a pain?

krazykarl just pulled his head. and his experience level is amateur wrench turner
calculate cost of new valves, new valve guides and seals, new belts, rollers, water pump, front seal. and machine shop to get head checked. deduct that cost from price of car that you're willing to pay hehe

Unless you know the car and seller well you might want to pull the valve cover and make sure the tensioner pad/chain hasn't failed. That can look like a belt failure externally but the head could be worthless from damage. S2 heads are not cheap. Just a thought.

Yes, if the centermost valve cover bolt can be wiggled around the tensioner is torn off the head. That bolt threads into the tensioner. Fit an allen wrench and shake it around a bit. It's the bolt threaded into the hole that is blended into the cam chain relief in the valve cover.
Either way the car might still be worth a fair bit as a platform for a V8 swap or 3.0 turbo project or put back into order with a complete running motor or a good head with cams, etc.

As for the difficulty factor, it wasn't all that bad. I did have to buy quite a few tools I didn't have in order to complete the job, and I had the assistance of a friend who had torn apart engines before. Biggest obstacle I ran into was removing the camshaft gear as it was seized to the cam due to rust.

Yea, I think it's a decent deal, but when you start adding it up I think you end up with 5K in the car and a lot of time. Ive been down this road before. I have seen decent ones for $6 to $7K.

i cant see the craigslist ad, but can tell you if it doesnt have LSD, there isnt much of value to that car, and it is worth significantly less than the sum of its parts.

$1,500 would be tops for me. It has LSD so that brings it up from $1k for a non running car in my book.
You could have real problems with more than just the head on that car. Broken valve damage to the cylinder bore, bits of cam sprockets down in the oil pan ready to cause chaos. For me three grand is too much for something I am going to have to spend several weekends to get going. Redoing the head for under $2k may be too optimistic as well.
