Cars have to get 18mpg or less. What does a 944 get according to those paying the $$?
I skimmed the program today. If the car has been registered for the past year and is under 25years old it qualifies. It doesnt say the wheels have to be true, the tires have tread, the clutch disk be in one piece, the torque tube have good bearings, or the interior not have rips. There are deals on a lot of new cheap cars right now.

It expires in November, or thereabouts. They made the legislation specifically to prevent folks from being able to game the system.

I hit the sweet spot on this one... in a way. I have an '88 Chevy truck that I paid $4k for 6 yrs ago. I've put some hard miles on it, hauling gravel and river rock, camping, moving my sons from house to house. It got rear-ended last November and I collected $1800 from insurance. It has 228k miles on it, looks halfway decent even after the accident, and is super reliable, but swigs the gas. I was going to sell it for about $800 (only because it has nice wheels and tires), but now it's worth $4500! but only if I buy a brand new car or a small truck. I have no such intention, but anyone who is thinking of buying new, I'll sell it to you for $2250, you can double your money!

edmunds list is far from comprehensive....
Passenger Car new vehicle must get 22mpg (which is ridiculous) which must be an improvement of: 4-9 mpg $3,500 10 mpg or more $4,500 fueleconomy.gov has an 86 944 listed at 18/25manual (17/24automatic) for a combined 20mpg (19 mpg in auto) so with the right "new car" it seems likely that we'd all qualify...I dont like new cars though ![]() I still find it amusing that a 89 geo metro ($1575 high book) is now rated at a 41 combined mpg....and the 09 prius costing $23,730 is only a 45. Guess those metro owners will have to keep theirs. Last edited by techartisan; 07-23-2009 at 12:00 PM. |

i didnt want a new car either. I was going to get myself a nice 10k M3 with say 75k miles on it. Then I saw the ad for my 181k M3 and spoke to the owner and decided I could get by with 5k more in my pocket, and was waiting to seal the deal on the 951 before looking at the car.
my wife was a little concerned about me getting a car with so many miles as my only car. Then we get the letter from teh GM card saying we can use all 2900 on one car. The compromise was i get the cheapest new car I could stomach and leave it alone so she isnt worried about us having only one car and two places to be. for 228 a month x60 i got a brand new astra which is a lot nicer than i thought, she gets piece of mind and I can tinker with the M3 at the pace i want without needing the car. a new gas sipper for next to nothing with that 4500 makes good economic sense.

I wish they had made it so the $4500 could be used to cover a new engine for an old car (provided the engine met certain fuel mileage/efficiency marks). I would put $4500 towards a complete rebuild of the 2.5l, which would dramatically reduce my car's emissions from burning oil because the piston rings are old...all the benefits of an environmentally friendly car with none of the side effects from disposing of an entire car
but that would be far too logical for our Congress

They make clean burning 2 strokes now. 2 strokes are better than 4 strokes, and anything more than 2 strokes is masturbation. Sorry now back to regular scheduled program.
