First of all, I had my collapsed motor mounts replaced and it makes a world of difference. The car is much quieter now, which unfortunately highlights how terrible the old speakers sound.

So I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for speakers in a 944. I know there are some unique requirments due to lack of depth. I'm looking for the front ones in the door, and the rears next to the back seats. I'd like to minimize cutting things to fit, but I don't know if that's possible in the back. Thanks,

They will tell you what fits the front. In my 1988 924S the depth is 1.75 inch. Not much to choose from.

6.5's fit in the rear

I did Polk Audio 4X6 in front and 6.5' in the back. I did not have to modify anything. I just had to unscrew the plates in the back that held the 4X6 that were in the back and the opening was perfect for the 6.5' speakers. I think the 6.5' in the back were an upgrade on my car.

The 6.5 won't fit in the rears without cutting metal on the 86 and earlier. The 87+ came stock with adapter plates for the 4x6 but you would need the the 6.5 plates from the 10-speaker option or cut your own. The 6.5's really help fill out the sound if you stay with door speakers only. The cutting isn't that bad as well as making your own MDF plates.

I'll second Crutchfield as a good source. I replaced the 4x6's front and rear in my '87. I plan to upgrade the rear to the 6.5" rounds, however. The 4x6's just don't have much oomph.

Just to close the loop on this for future searches: Clark's Garage has some good info on speaker fitment and installation. Go to the shop manual and to the 'S' section for 'Stereo'. Cheers,

Hmmm Crutchfield isn't listing any 4x6's as being available for my front speakers.

I have an 85.5 and the top left portion of the speaker is covered by the dash so there's no room really for it to pop out.

What speaker brands and models has anyone found to fit that aren't discontinued?

I called Crutchfield, and they told me they had nothing for my car. Referred me to Porsche!

Clark's garage recommended Alpine SXE-4625s. Sound good, fit with no mods. Can only find them in UK. $59 to buy, $130 to ship!!!

I pulled the speaker out of the door. I'm going to bring it to Best Buy and other local shops to see if they have anything that would fit. Man, those 4x6's are not very big....The originals were Blaupunkt though. Were they any good in there day or always to small to sound good? They pop and crackle with any volume now.

I use onlinecarstereo.com and just check the depth of the speaker in the specs.

I believe that Crutchfield's website will allow you to spec the vehicle and the resulting search will only provide speakers that fit.
