That was really good. I found the blue nitrile gloves helped alot in keeping the hands clean department. I liked the idea of using the screwdriver to tension the bearings. But I wonder if there not a tad too tight and think that after spinning the rotor and tightening the nut the way you do you might want to back off a eighth of a turn. Just my 2 cents. All together a very instructive video.

a great vid and very helpfull fo those considering there first DIY.. gotta comment on that bearing tightening method .. certainly explains 3 sets of wheel bearings in ten years. That is the correct method to seat the bearing but it must be backed off about the 1/8th that jim suggests ...

Great vid tho ....

My thought has been that I want zero bearing play, but minimal preload. Turning the hub while tightening with the screw driver ensures the bearing rollers are contacting the races - and with a screw driver, you really don't have much leverage. I think you'll find the preload isn't as tight as you think.

But I'm willing to listen to other opinions and anecdotal evidence. I've found that I get wheel wobble on the track if the bearings are looser than that. It's very disconcerting to hit the brakes at 140 MPH and find they go half-way to the floor because the lateral loading on the wheels has caused the rotor to tilt and push the pistons back into the calipers a little bit.

That's just my 2 cents.

(Is a set of wheel bearings for every 10,000 track miles really that bad? I get about 2,000 miles out of a set of tires... and about 1,000 miles (sometimes less) our of front brake pads.)

Great video (sounds like you had some helpers?!)

I just adjusted my front wheel bearing the other day, due to a perceived shimmy. I think your method is fine. Excessive pre-load is bad for bearing life, excessive looseness is bad for steering and brakes. It's really hard to find that zero pre-load/zero play level, so going a little tight is prudent. With bearings costing about $20 a set, I can live with a little life reduction.

Great job....the 944 community says THANK YOU !

I need to tighten mine (replaced not all that long ago by the 'wrench') prior to my next track event ...so timing is outstanding !

Fantastic contribution. Now just keep praying for the hubs not to become warped from plain old use.

Nice vid, Van. I think one of my front bearing literally just started going yesterday (groaning noise at speed). If I bring my car to the Lemons race, will you change them for me? :-)

Rennlist should do a sticky ...keep all this quality information consolidated. 944 101...basic maintenance/FAQ. I will do a silicone vacuum line replacement soon...I will be filming it at least. Ha...

It is much nicer to actually watch how to do something rather then reading it in a book. Great job Van i'd love to see more 944 DIY videos.
