hatch back question
ok when i push the little hatch release down by my left foot should the hatch actually unlatch then lift all the way open by itself. i know at one time mine used to open enough to were it wasnt locked shut anymore. now my shocks are so bad that i push the button and i hear the motor going but the hatch doesnt move at all...i have been opening it with my key for a while.

No, the hatch will not generally come up on its own. I think I had this happen a few times actually (the hatch came up on its own after hitting the hatch release) but I think that was more wind-related than anything
BTW, you could just be having sticking mounts (or a dying motor - but clean out those holes first) that would impede the hatch from opening... but the bad shocks probably aren't helping anything.

Not sure if there is a corelation but there seems to be a lot of rear hatch glass separation soon after replacing the rear hatch shocks. Anyopne else notice this?

$80 sounds about right from an auto-parts store.
Here is what Vertex has to say:
<a href="http://www.vertexauto.com/epcproductdetail.epc?cookieID=0QI07D8S2&subcatid=0028&catid=103" target="_blank">http://www.vertexauto.com/epcproductdetail.epc?cookieID=0QI07D8S2&subcatid=0028&catid=103</A>
You might want to check out special sales at online parts places though (sometimes they advertise these in Exce"9ll's are all we talk about"ence...) Usually these shocks are some where on there. Ignore Performance Product's "sales" - it's a sale alright... after a 20% mark-up in the normal price.
Nice color BTW

Der Cupmeister, YEP. The glass delaminated within a couple weeks of replacing the struts/shocks on the hatch.
That gave me the opportunity to have sooooo much fun taking the glass out, cleaning everything up and putting it back in. No noise now, and I press the button, and the hatch pops open.

ACTUALLY,
the hatch IS supposed to automatically lift on its own when you press the button. It is supposed to go ALL the way up.
BUT, in order to get this to work, you will need REALLY good hatch shocks, and the pins on your hatch have to be PERFECTLY aligned.

Even the factory gave up on calling it an automatic opener. They settled for remote unlocking mechanism. Delamination comes about because of the mechanical stresses placed on the assembly by two factors: One, the lifting cylinders and two, binding of the hinges, which become stiff and cruddy with age and neglect. Study the geometry of the assembly and it becomes obvious. Further proof is that the part of the assembly BELOW the attachment points for the struts rarely separates.
It is a very poor design and why Porsche stuck with it rather than changing it (for example, Camaro and Firebird hinge directly through the glass, eliminating the stress point between the aluminum frame and the glass) is beyond me. Probably just another example of good old Teutonic stubbornness.

Sam,
How did you reattach the glass and what did you use?

umm.. doesnt it mention somewhere in the manual that the hatch release is only meant to unlock the hatch and not pop it open or anything of the sort? i think so...
while on the topic of the hatch.. and the locking pins.. they lock in and hold in place by 2 teeth in each hole.. that clasp closed on them.. well mine are very unwilling to come out of their holes when turned to open.. they dont spring back. well actually on one side its fine, the other side, one does and one doesnt, i have to press its opposite end in with a key or something to get it to pop out, then i can close my hatch and its fine till the next time i decide to open the hatch.. then i have to remember to pop the clasp out again before locking down or it wont be completely secured on one side! i sprayed lithium grease in there.. didnt help.. what else can i spray in there or do to that clasp?

I got the idea from the guys that "shave" their door handles and use solenoids to release the lock mechanism and spring loaded "poppers" to open the doors. Since I don't have the unreliable rear hatch opening system, just put the solenoid inside somewhere to relase the plates that hold the hatch down and use the poppers to push it up...my not go up all the way, but you'd just have to use a hand to finish it. Would be nice having it on remote when coming out of the store.

The latches tend to get gunked up over time and not release or hold properly. They are only held on by two nuts and the rod to work the mechanism. Take them off, clean with carb cleaner or something similar, relub and reinstall. The other problem you might encounter in the reinstall is if you torque the nuts down too tight, the latches will bind in whatever position you put them. Proper torque is critical to correct function. HTH

Shaun,
I was going to contradict your point, but it looks like a couple of posters already took care of it for me <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
I somewhat agree though - originally it was SUPPOSED to come up on its own - but it never played out that way hence the lack of claims by Porsche that it would raise the thing.
Does your hatch pop all of the way up?
