Default Timing Belt

So I bought a 1990 944 s2Cab and doing the proper maintenance.

There is record of the timing belt being changed about 6,000 miles ago...but that was 10 years ago .

My question is what is the life expectancy of belts if only has that few miles on it, that was mainly garaged? - Mechanic said belts still look good and in proper spec, but I didn't realize at the preinspection that it was 10 years ago (the owner said 6,000 miles ago...go figure)

I am planning to probably just replace this anyway...but have some other items I would like to do first if possible.

i'd say do it asap. the belt ages from rot as well as use. and doing headwork on a s2 is prob more expensive than on a 8v NA.

I when trougth the same thing when I boutgh my 968 this summer almost no mileage on the belts but was done 5 years ago I did them rigth away ,also make sure the water pump & all seals are ok while your at it, & Yuliang is rigth mine had small cracks in them from age. Also very important on the s2 & 968 is the timming chain & all associated parts that goes with it, your mechanic should had mention it to you.And send pics of the car specialy if it's s2 cab.

X100, You should change out the belts ASAP. I would not drive the car anymore until the belts are changed. Rate of change 3 yrs or 30K miles. See if the water pump was ever changed, 60K. You run the risk of a $2,000 head job if cam belt breaks. The cam chain tensioner pads (made of Teflon) should be replaced along with a new chain. You run the risk of a $2,000 head job if that breaks. If they break the head is ruined most likely. When this all is accomplished you will be able to breathe easier and enjoy your car.
