Looking to get ideas on pricing for an 89 S2 with 113k miles. Black on Black, LSD rear wiper, heated drivers, New cams and chain in the last 3k miles, seats have wear with one tear. No know accident history but the passenger quarter has signs of orange peal.
I have been following prices but I would like to have a group thought on what this car would be worth. |

Or just swap it for a nice 1988 944 n/a, red with 74,000 miles.

I'd wager $7K.. maybe ask $8K if selling.. $5.5K if buying.

As with everything, it depends upon the education of the buyer.
If it's a rennlist member, and the car is LSD and was fully maintained and is 100% up to snuff...you'd probably get between $7k and $8k depending upon color, options, location, etc. If it's not LSD and not fully maintained....probably more like $4k to $5k If it's an un-educated (in a porsche sense) consumer you may be able to get more.....with the "wow..a nice porsche for under $10k" factor....depending upon the economy, location, color, appearance, etc. If you are a BUYER...then you want to be in the I AM RENNLIST....I AM AN EDUCATED BUYER category.....in which case you'll not pay more than what the car is worth unless it's in the right location, in the color you want, and in fully maintained condition.

Joe,
the guy that bought my S2 a year ago was not a rennlist type guy. he tested a few cars and wasnt going any more than he did for a shiny porsche. he told me how great my car was, and all that, but... bottom line, in this marketthere are very few stupid buyers, and there are a lot of newer more reliable cars that offer the same performance or better for less.

Most factory cars have orange peel, so I wouldn't sweat a little. The big question to me is WHERE this car is. I'm thinking max in the mid 6's if it is from a warm climate. I personally have an aversion to northern cars based on experience, and it would take a lot to get me to even look at one.

I hear you Tom....but I still think there is a $1k to $2k swing depending upon location and buyer knowledge.
I also believe that right now the 944 series is feeling a TON of pressure from cheap boxsters and 996's which makes it more of a challenge

Car is in the south, is a LSD car, and am told records from last two owners. Abs is not working but that has been the only disclosed mech fault. I am very fond of the color combo.
I am buying to be able to haul my mtn bike and keep some miles off my 987s. The asking price is 6500, not sure how I feel about that with Abs not working. I was feeling about the same on vAlue as what has been stated, felt I should ping the rennlisters and make sure I have not lost my mind. |

I just have to be honest...
buy a 944 with a 10 - 12 thousand dollar budget, for purchase, interior updates, belts, [serious repair issues COMING SOON], tuneup, etc and you will be having a good time. And with an 8 - 10 thousand dollar budget you can find a 968, change the belts, dump the cat, add a proper exhaust, do a tune-up and you're done... In a couple of years you can change to Sparco leather seats, 996 carbon steering wheel and airbag, 996 carbon shift knob , do a full stereo upgrade, and start saving for eventual engine and transmission builds. I am sorry guys but I've been spending a lot of time researching the 944s and the sellers want 5, 6, 7 grand for cars that are difficult to justify spending over 3 k to purchase... and turbos ? Incredible, and "oh my God get out your wallet" all in the same breath. The repair/sweat/aggrivation costs associated with 944s are just through the roof. The 968s have far fewer mechanical problems. I've put about 12 k in upgrades, updates, and simple maintanance... In 50 k miles of driving just changed oil, did the belts once [15 k miles ago], and two tune ups. 1. new K and N air filter 2. fuel filter 3. Transaxle fluid 4. change oil 5. spark plugs.... oh God, that's really hard, I am driving, not fixing a ridiculously beautiful, cosmetically updated, mechanically flawless, performance upgraded, 968 for south of 21 k total. Transmission rebuild, clutch and supercharger up next. 3-5 k for almost any 944. |

I will admit that I would love a 968 but it's purely for the asthetics...it is absolutely the best looking of the 9xx series. I just don't see there being much more to want other than that between a 968 and an S2. And you pretty much get the lower end of the 968 spectrum at $8k....where as you can get a really nicely maintained S2 for that money. You and I see very different things.
