Default Question About OEM Windshield-86 NA

When the 86 NA's windshield is out of the car, is it clear around the edges? I have found a windshield on a car that has been sitting for a long time outside. The edges are faded and tired looking. Would this glass be "good as new" if it is taken out and cleaned up? The glass has no chips or cracks.

THANKS
James

There's a mask around the edges - a black border where it sits on the urethane and you really don't see it when it's installed. But other than that, it's clear.

And no, once it gets to the point where it starts turing milky, there's no fixing it. Time for a new windshield. Safelite now has the correct Sekurit windshields for our cars - I just had one installed in my '87 (and it's my 4th windshield!).

I have found one that is new and cheap....probably made in China. This makes me question the quality. They would install it for $240.

You can always ask what the part number of the glass/manufacturer is. Check out this thread of mine from back in April:

Not only will it be Chinese glass, but it won't have the embedded antenna in it either. Prices vary by state, but expect to pay around $350-$500 installed, for the correct glass.

Safelite carries two windshields for our cars - one with and one without the antenna. The one without is Chinese. The one with is Sekurit and comes with the trim channel and mirror button already bonded to the glass. The Chinese glass uses a generic rubber edge trim which is about 2-3mm wider than the factory trim.

Chinese glass:

Forgot to mention - it's hit and miss with the Chinese glass. Some will have really bad distortion, others will be acceptable. If you go with the Chinese glass, the installer better know what he's doing - all the old urethane will need to come out of the pinch weld. The old stuff needs to come out anyway - it's too old to make a good bed for the new urethane.

I've had two bad Chinese glass installs and one good one. The guy who did the good job got called back to install the Sekurit glass.

Thanks for the information. I will ask who makes the glass and the manufacturers name.
