Default Feeler FS thread, short 5th gear

Hey all you spec (and otherwise) racers, I know you guys like the short ratio 5th gear from the 88 944 and the 951s.

I have a 951 gearbox in my car that I am contemplating swapping the 5th from my broken NA box in to, for slightly lower highway cruising RPMs and maybe better mileage.

If I did this, that would leave me with a 0.829:1 gear that I don't really need. I was wondering what kind of interest there might be from you guys for this gear. I would either sell the gearset (seems to go for around $250 in old threads) or I have a spare working early NA transmission I could put the gear into for you ($400), but the later guys might have an issue with mounting. I have put a late trans in an early car, but I don't know if it will work the othe way around.

If there is anyone interested in this let me know so I can make up my mind to do this or not!

The taller NA 5th in the 951 box is a gas-sipper if you do alot of hiway miles.

Did you notice much of an improvement? I want to bring revs down and see some more mpg.

The last couple tanks, I've been averaging 28-29 mpg's as I've been alittle more heavy footed. The first tank after the swap I went to Tulsa and Stillwater Oklahoma from OKC and at a steady 70mph got a solid 30mpg's out of the LM7 and tranny combo.

That's awesome...think there'd be an appreciable MPG advantage with the 4.8 motor? For some reason I want one of those badly for my eventual V8 swap, small V8s make my giblets tingle.

IMO, I think the 4.8 would knock down another 5mpg's. I've built some V8 swap parts for Spencer and he should be getting close to complettion with that exact motor. It is a different beast with a shorter stroke crank, so it will rev like nobody's business on stock internals.

Rocket,
I will buy the short 5th for a backup if you will adjust the price. I never pay over 135 a set shipped to az.
Not trying to lo ball anyone, it's just the price we pick these up for.
Let me know if you can.
Thanks.
