Unknown bolt on top of transmission

Unknown bolt on top of transmission
Can anyone tell me what this bolt does? I bought a used 951 transmission and this bolt was left halfway unscrewed. I removed it and see nothing but a hole.
What is it's purpose?
Thank you.

It locates the shift dogleg for reverse gear. You're going to have to separate the gear carrier (end plate) from the diff carrier, and install the bolt as described in the workshop manual.

Okay, I'm stuck. I've been trying to install this reverse mechanism for a few hours. I've used the factory manual and threads on here for reference, but it just doesn't line up right.
Could this piece be bent? It's not perfectly flat. Any pointers?

It's a bit tricky to line up, and I always do it with the input (main) and pinion shafts removed during a rebuilt. You have to press against the spring-loaded bushing that gates this piece.
When you do get the bolt engaged and snugged, make sure there's clearance between the dogleg and the 5th/reverse shift rod. I use a feeler and look for at least 0.20 mm. If it's tight against the shaft, back it off one thread. Blue threadlocker on the bolt, torque to 35 Nm, and use a Phillips #4 socket unless you have a later transmission where -- doh! -- VW switched rather sensibly to a Torx head fastener.
But having said that and looking at your picture, yep, yours looks bent. PM me your address, I can ship you a good used replacement if you cover the postage.

Part is in the mail to you. I should add that however the lever got bent, it took some significant force. I would check the 5/R shift rod, esp. the leg with the pin that engages the lever. Also check the reverse idler.

Thanks to Kevin's generosity, the new reverse guide he sent went right in, easily. Mine was obviously bent.
As far as if the reverse shift rod goes, well, I'm not quite sure. Looks like it may have been slightly bent downward when the reverse guide was bent. But I can't be certain. It seems to shift in and out of reverse okay, so I guess I'll try it.
I don't have any history on this transmission, other than it was in a track car. I'm guessing it was an improper shift at some point that resulted in this?
