Call EBS and tell them what you are doing. They will package up all the right stuff and give you a great deal.

Thanks for the site, i'll give them a call.

Is there a vin number on the engine anywhere? I'm curious to look up the car this engine came out of. Also is there a way to visually determine which tranny I have?

The engine ID number should be on the drivers side of the block to the next to the Air Oil Separator

i guess i wasnt super clear. my reference to an "S" head was to the 2.5L 16v engine, which should have an identical water passage to the standard 2.5 8v head.

Your body style is 944S based on VIN includes HN. If it was an S2 it would have KN.

Your intake manifold is S, your air filter is S, your throttle valve crank is S, two bolt coolant return indicates S. You have a 944S head and most assuredly a 944S block. Who told you it was an S2 block?

944 Online is asking $495 for a rebuilt water pump? When I was buying them a new over the counter at Porsche was $520 or something. An OEM rebuilt should not be more than $250.

Oh, I have some belt tools for sale in the For Sale Forum.

The stamp on the engine in the picture he took shows M44/41. That is without a doubt a 944 S2 block. 944 S is M44/40

I looked at that and thought it looked like 44/47 and chose to ignore it. He is still asking for where to find the engine number. Everything else in that photo is out of focus so what is in the picture is debatable but if it is the engine number and it is 44/41 you are correct that would be an S2 block.

Viperns - If that is the case best of luck to you on the rebuild, you are in uncharted territory. If you have the money for rebuilding you really should upgrade to the S2 head.

I can read the engine umber correctly it is the 44/41, Its blurry but it was the best I could get the camera to focus on without taking things apart. As for asking for the engine number I was asking if there is a VIN number located on the engine anywhere so that i could look up the car that it came out of. It would let me know what year the block was.

So the two bolt coolant return indicates an S head? Is the coolant return the only way to tell the difference between the S and S2 head

One of your pics shows some of the part number of the cyl head. Get that part number and that will tell you what head you have for sure. 944 104 013 03 is the S head.

The pics posted by V2R clearly indicate that the two bolt water return are 2.5l or S parts.

Here is the part number. I thought V2R's were 8v heads?

I ran across this page: and at the very bottom it lists this part number as an 89-92 S2 head.

I would say at this point that you have an S2 engine, block and head, with 944S manifolds and accessories.

V2R's pictures were 8v heads, the bolt up and water passages are the same as on the 16v heads. On second thought, looking at the two bolt water return perhaps the 16v S2 head is not the same.

You have now answered your question, purchase all S2 parts internally for the engine.
