Default S2 Power Increase with Stand-alone ECU?

I've been thinking of going down the stand alone ECU route with MAP sensor for my S2. There seems to be a lot of data on tuning for turbos with their easy power gains, though not much for NAs and S2s.

Is there any data to support power gains using standalone? I noticed Henk's car (HJK) recorded 205 rwhp (though perhaps at quite high RPM).

How does this compare to a MAF sensor upgrade such as Vitesse on an S2? A Vitesse seems relatively expensive (due to the cost of the MAF itself I presume) given you can get a standalone for similar money with a MAP.

From memory, I think Henk has a tricked out 968 engine in his "S2".

I just re-read the thread and I'm pretty sure it's an S2 engine.

Hasn't even had the motor opened up either. Remember though, a number is just a number when you're dealing with dynos.

Yeah, I just had a quick skim too -- agree, looks like S2 with stand-alone mgmt. I think the key to this number must be in that he's going to 7200RPM -- no way that's comparing apples to apples with the published stock HP number.

The Standalone by itself will add nothing HP wise. It's all in the tuning!
When looking at a standalone make sure you configure the installation and tuning cost. The harsware is the least expensive part. Spending $1000-2000 on a dyno tuning is not out of the question. Add to it the time you spend getting the drivability issues.

There are many S2 engines making much over 205rwhp and still using the Motronic.

you should look at mega squirt. Maf lits can be had from promax in the uk not as expensive as others and made in germany. Also look for the tread with my Mega squirt question as one of the members put up a tuner pro bundle for na motronic cars, its defenatly worth a look.

Unless you have a dedicated tuner and access to a lot of dyno time, its going to be pretty expensive 1500-2000k just to squeeze out maybe an extra 25hp/tq if lucky, maybe more if not a stock config.

My advise is before you buy any standalone do some research and see if someone already has some base maps for your car for any particular package. This is going to save you a lot of $$$ and time.

A MAP sensor is used off of Vacuum at the intake manifold; so the AFM on our cars works with a flap door that opens with vacuum from the motor similar to a MAP sensor the question is does a MAP sensor five out the same volts or signal that our AFM does..? if it does it would be a very easy swap to a MAP; if it doesnt then some mods would be needed to get a similar signal to the DME using a MAP...

looks like the S2 has the same power peak as other 944s, at 5800rpm...bump the redline to say, 7000, better cams, and i imagine you could make some more.

A MAP sensor is a hardware possibility, but the software will need to be re-written for it. At best the transfer function will need to be changed from 2D to 3D to account for VE...

I understand that it is all in the tuning. I would have thought $1,000 for tuning would be reasonable.

John, what sort of hp do you get out of an S2 with your MAF kit?

I would use a MAP with a standalone ECU. Most modern ECU's use MAP sensors. I would be looking for a WOLF or similar ECU. The plan is to ultimately supercharge, which is better to tune with a MAP.

Sounds interesting. Any more information - did you regrind the stock cams or custom? Dyno?

As above the MAP sensor would go with the standalone.
