Post Spring behind steering wheel? Also grounds?

In the post written by MHT in this thread:

<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=018311#000000" target="_blank">http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=018311#000000</a>

he writes about me possibly needing to replace a broken watch spring behind the steering wheel. Can anyone give me the part number, and also procedure for changing it? I've never pulled a steering wheel with an airbag before and I'm a little concerned about firing it off...

Also I'm still trying to find out where my grounds are. Can anyone tell me the page number in the factory manual (on CD - PDF's) where it talks about troubleshooting/replacing the grounds?

One last question - what should I replace them with? I assume I can just make new ones? What gauge wires? Are crimps ok or should they be soldered?

Thanks!

MJ

MJ, the location of the ground points is found in the wiring diagrams, I don't have the CD but in the paper book they are on page 15 of the 88 944 wiring diagram book. The part no for the watch spring is 928 652 211 00, this is the new number which is a supersession from 944...... . Replacing the spring. Disconnect battery, let car sit for 30 min. to allow capacitors to discharge, remove the air-bag, it is held on by two Torx head bolts from the back of the wheel, I think they are T25 but I am not sure. Carefully remove the airbag and gently place it in a safe location. Remove the steering wheel and the black plastic cover behind it. The spring is held by two screws, top right and bottom left. remove trim under the column to access the wiring from the spring contact, disconnect two plugs and remove the spring. Make sure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead and install the new spring, when you get the spring it will be locked in the centered position, don't move it from there until you are ready to install it. If it is not locked you can center it yourself by gently turning it from lock to lock, count the turns and then turn it back by 1/2 the total. From there as they say installation is the reverse of removal.

Sorry MJ the bolts holding the airbag to the wheel are T30 not 25. Good luck Mark T.

Mark (MHT) I tried to email you but got no reply. I got a few quotes on that "watch spring" and everyone wants in excess of $200!!! Are you sure that's the right number? Also I assume from your knowledge that you had to replace it. How much did you pay?

Thanks.

MJ
