Default Rear wheel won't rotate. '83 944 stored 18years

I'm currently bringing back my '83 944 to life, but facing a possible problem with the left rear wheel.

With the rear lifted on stands, the left rear wheel will only rotate by hand a tiny amount forward or reverse. There is a distinct clunk when is stops rotating. The right rear wheel will spin freely either way.

The car has been sitting stored indoors parked for about 18 years. The car ran and drove without issue at the time is was parked. I assume something within the transaxle is frozen .. rust. I'm hoping getting some lubrication inside there will help free things up. I'm reluctant to run engine before knowing what the possible problem to avoid damaging something.

Any tips?

Thanks for your help in advance!

i'd start by pulling the wheel off and inspecting the parking brake.

Ditto what Spencer says.
The transaxle and wheel bearings are all greased or oiled up. They won't be rusted. The brakes will rust. It's probably the park brake cable, but maybe the actual foundation brakes or park brakes.

Belts and rollers before running it.

It was the parking brake. The thrust bar and lever of the parking brake assembly were frozen/rusted in the engaged position. This was keeping the parking brake engaged on that wheel. It was a little difficult removing the brake rotor, but all is good now.

Thanks for the quick responses! @V2Rocket, @Noahs944

belts rollers and water pump.. check! @snb13

Default Pinch bolt

pull the plugs to lessen the pressures required to turn the flywheel
