Default depowering a rack- shimming... last thing i need to do and its back on the road!

so i have my rack apart and ive got everything down except for the whole "shim" thing to take out the 15 degrees of slop. ive got my valve/pinion gear in one piece still and have no idea what to do next. i was hoping it would be a little more self explanatory once i took the bolt off holding the pressure relief springs in but i still have no idea after doing that...

if anyone's had any experience with this, i'd love to hear some wisdom...

Thanks!
Chris

well if i can't get this figured out, is the slop that bad? Ive read thats what causes alot of the undesired "mushiness" in a depowered rack...

This helped me.

And here's my documentation.

I didn't do the shim mod, but haven't driven a car with the shim mod, so it's hard to compare. I personally think it's fine though.

thanks! i actually should have mentioned though that i had seen most of whats out there but it seems like people kind of skim over the part about actually shimming. your tech pdf is amazing by the way, ive pretty much done exactly as you have (except i bought those bolts to plug the ports).

ive got a general understanding of why you need shims but no real description on how to go about it...

im assuming once you knock one of those dowels out, the pinion shaft can seperate from the valve? maybe it'll be obvious once i get one of those out...

Basically you need to take up the space where the spring was located with something that is not compressible. You can use a cut down nail etc... to do this.

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh i get it now. so you don't need to remove either of those dowels that holds the torsion bar? just remove the screw, take out springs, put in non compressable material, place caps back on and rebolt? how did you determine how long the material needs to be? thanks by the way, im just excited to get this done!

I am sorry, it has been a while since I have had these parts in my hands, so I am not sure what you are refering to here.

Yes, that's it. IIRC it was just trial and error. I just checked the position/heights of the parts and made sure they were the same after I was done. I hope that makes sense, like I said it has been a while since I have had one apart and I can't seem to find a decent pic anywhere.

A few months, with 3 or 4 auto-x events and two DE's with no issues.

And I flat-tow the car, so my steering gets a work out to and from the track.
