My buddy had an Opel Kadett which we camped in overnight!! Jim Hall with a Chaparral was on the pole. Unfortunately, during the LeMans start, he could not get the engine lit. By the time he finally was underway, some 30 cars had passed him. Nontheless, by the end of the first lap he was in 6th and by lap six, he was in the lead. All of us GI's and other Americans let out a huge cheer. It was all for naught as some small part broke and he was done. At that time, we knew little about racing and, to us, with Hall out, the race was over.

Memorial Day was the following week. I had time off and went to the local sports car dealership to check out the cars. The owner was trying his best to sell me a Alfa GTV. He spoke English very well and after talking for a bit, I discovered that he had driven a Lotus Elan in the 1000KM race. He said he was on one of the fastest parts of the track when he saw this big white thing closing quickly. The passing rate was so intense that he said his legs started to shake!!

your's were even better. Thank you!

Thanks for posting these photos - very interesting. I can't get my 8 and 11 year old in the back of the 944 without them whinging about the lack of space. Yet when I was a child we had an old 1959 VW beetle which we often sat in for long trips. Back then I think as kids we just accept the lack of space, now if there's not a lot of room + DVD player or DS they complain.

Default Finished Scanning my slides-more treasures

I have finished scanning my old slides and came across some more interesting photos. The first photos are from the 1981 Pabst 500 at Road America and show a 924GTR.

More 924GTR's from the 1982 Can Am race at Road America.

924 Carrera GT at Road America at the 1984 Porsche Parade.

924 Carrera GT at the 1981 Asheville Parade.

You're welcome. Here is a shot of our very first Porsche, a 1977 1/2 924 that we purchased new. Our in-laws had kept the kids for the weekend and we are trying to get everything into the 924 including the kids. We drove home with the hatch partially open!!

We took pictures of it next to a 356, we sat in the car, we peered under the hood, etc.

That summer Porsche ran an ad campaign in printed media featuring a red 944 just like this one. When the fold out ad appeared in a June issue of TIME magazine, I could only gawk at the large photo of the newest Porsche.

Now I can finally see what a real new example looked like back then. Thank you so much for posting these photos!

Those are the wheels that came on the car. If I remember correctly, steel wheels were standard but most of the early 924's came with these wheels. I have never heard a name for them.
