944s are awsome cars but 911s are just better cars..thats why it keeps its resale value..more in demand since thus keeps its resale value. another reason is that they still make 911's while 944s were discontinued over 10yrs ago.

There are many 356 owners that still don't think the 911 series are real Porsches... some people can be so stubborn.
Think this kind of elitist crap happens between Ferrari owners? "Your 355 Spyder is not a real Ferrari because real Ferrari's are V-12's", "Oh yeah, well your Testarossa isn't a real Ferrari because real Ferrari's have their V-12's in the front!" I can feel their pain from here...

I know my 90 944 Cab is a real Porsche. Its 1990 window sticker is as much as a new Boxster today. And I'm pretty sure that everyone considers a Boxster a Porsche.
While I was researching the purchase of my 944 a few years ago, I read that the 1989 Turbo S was the fastest production car Porsche made until 1996. Is this true?

At first, we worked for other companies. "But always," my father said, "there were too many compromises." So we formed Porsche -to build Porsches. To our family's own standards. Without compromise. Our very first Porsche was the 356. Now there is a new Porsche: the 944. Remember the 944 was designed to replace the 924 which was designed to replace the 914. Honestly these are entry level Porsches. From the beginning the 911 was the Line's Flagship road car. By design the 911 in all years produced was "better" than a the same year 944 just as the 996 is "better" than the boxster. The 944 Turbo is different story since it actually competed quite nicely with the 911 Turbo of its day.
The 911 is uniquly Porsche. Always has been and always will be. The 944 has a semi-basterized history due to the VW involvement. It looks like many other cars on the road (eg Toyota supra, RX7 because they copied the shape) and was a signifianct departure from the more traditional Porsches. It was designed and developed by Porsche and therefore it is one.
Obviously resale value of the cars is driven by their performance in small part and by perception in large part. To me their low value is not problem rather it is blessing as it allows me and my parents to own the following..
84 944 - Family Pristince Show Car & Multiple concour Winner
84-944 - My Race Car for 944-spec
86 944 Turbo - Dad's Street/Track Car
88 944 Turbo S - My Street Car
91 928 S4 - Momma's Grand Touring Car Extrodinare!
All this for less than the cost of 1 New Boxster S!
If the watercooled front engine line held their value owning these cars would not be possible.
To me low value means plenty of cheap cars for the real enthusaists to own, drive, and enjoy.
Also the factory has not made a 911 in years.
The last 911 was produce in 1989 model year. After that came the 964 & 993 revisions to the basic car, but still carried much of the feel and body shell of the original.
Now the 996 is produced that only a 911 because Porsche feels it will sell better as "911" rather than a 996.

The 911 is an overpriced VW bug..with some modifications..IF you disagree, please lists the differences. On both sides, this is for my own benefit before I purchase one or the other. am looking currently for a 951.. make me believe I need to overspend on a 911/bug?

I am well aware of the 911 history. And current status.. was just trying to point out that the VW concept is one and the same.. actually the dream of ferdinand before hitler MADE him do it.. 356 was the result of it... THanks for the reply though

M758 - you get the discussion around to an interesting point: the 928 was developed to be the replacement for the 911 as the top-of-the-line car. Problem was that the 911 was too successful (to simplify the issue) at that point, and all the people who could afford the top car wanted what they, new and previous Porsche owners alike, felt was a "real" Porsche - certainly not a heavy (relative to the 911) front-engine water-cooled car so closely related to the entry-level 944! So Porsche was effectively financially blackmailed into continuing with the 911 - in a tribute to the abilities of my German counterparts, a triumph of German bloody-minded-ness over basic physics - until the very recent years, where they finally (in spite of massive uproar) managed to get the 911 water-cooled, out of sheer necessity for emissions. Of course, they had to spend stupid amounts of time and money to make it look, drive, and sound like the same old car. Even so they got blasted in the press because it was different - drove too tamely... </rant>

Don't forget that the 944 Turbo was ALSO designated to replace the 911, but for the same reasons as Vaughan said it did not happen.
BTW... The 928 is the greatest GT car ever made and the 911 is probably the greatest sports car/production based race car ever made...
and the 944... one of the best handling cars ever made.
