Very slight noise from rear end 944 NA
Hi all,
We have been putting miles on the '86 944 that I dragged home for my daughter (after belts and everything) and I have noticed an odd noise that is very very hard to describe. I think is from the limited slip diff and maybe it's normal?
When pulling away from a dead stop and turning left or right there is a kind of shudder/grunch/grumble from the rear. It can olny be heard slightly when the window is down. Only I hear it my daughter does not. This sounds does not happen when pulling away straight. only when turning from a dead stop. It's not from the front only the rear.
Does the LSD make this sound normally?
I will change the oil in the trans/rear this weekend with a mobil1 synthetic just in case the oil is shot after 25 years and 117K miles.
What do you think??

Are you sure the car has an LSD?
If so, maybe the PO has the wrong gear oil in there. It will shudder on turns if it's the wrong oil. I use Redline 75W90 for my LSD.

I wish you could better describe the sound. I am in a similar predicament. I have been hearing an odd sound from the rear of my car, more of a clunk or grumble and the guys on Pelican forum said CV joints. My CV joints were done 9000 miles ago but on their sayso, I pulled and redid the CVs, (3 done 1 to go) and everything is good so far. If the 4th CV today passes the test, I will be without a clue as to the problem. I will then change the oil in the diff. but...
