Default no-start?

as per other posts, got the belts and everything on

went to start the car, car started, ran for a little bit, shut it off

went back to work on it a few days later, it would "almost" start, but won't start, went "hunting" and found out that the wire on the starter was bad - looked like due to age

just got a new starter in, went to start the car, and the same thing happens as before, like the starter won't turn

starter is getting power, fuel pump comes on (can hear it?) ... but no start

so I am guessing this is the DME relay problem? all the fuses are good

thanks guys

this one was recharged, and we were using a "jump", car should have started, we checked it with a tester and the charge is good

starter is new

we pulled out the DME relay just now, and opened it, and it "appears" to be alright inside

I did a search, and seems like it could be speed/reference sensor(s) and/or DME relay

also, connectors on the DME closer to the plastic housing, looks like they are "burned", but inside looks fine

Is the starter cranking the engine? If so, do you have tach bounce?

no it's not

when I turn the key, all I hear is the humming noise - from the fuel pump

my dad just checked the relay connectors, and it appears to check out and work fine

Have an alarm system on that car?

How about all the wires going to the starter?

my dad says everything is connected and starter is bolted in

I'm having second thoughts myself right now

no reason for the car not to start at this point

we just turned the engine by hand and the belts and everything is fine, so I know it's not that, and even if it were the belts, the starter should still "crank"

should I still try a new DME? what about those other sensors?

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a while to clear everything, like Porsche alarm, ecu etc.. ?

there is no alarm on the car

when we went to start it before, and it wouldn't start, we found a wire on the starter that has "separated"

is there a relay for the starter or something? maybe that's bad

or maybe DME is bad

there is no reaction when I turn the key, battery light comes on, oil gauge bounces up to 1 (or so) and drops back down

My 84 had intermittent issues where turning the key didnt crank the starter, just the fuel pump would hum. Is there something there in the ignition tumbler that could go bad?

well I ordered a new DME from Pelican (28 in stock and Next Day Air is only $13) ... so there ... if this fixes it, fine, if not, we'll have more digging to do

that trouble shooting guide is not bad too, but my problem is, that there is power going everywhere, but the starter does not crank the car ... and DME is one of the first culprits to check (according to search, and everyone's favorite Clark's Garage!)

why don't you jump or bypass the dme, i forgot which it's called. all you need is 3 wires and 3 small male connectors. http://clarks-garage.com/pdf-manual/fuel-05.pdf

going to:

1) put the DME back in
2) check connections at the battery again
3) make sure connections on starter are good, again
4) take starter back to Autozone and have them check it, to make sure it's actually good ... maybe its one of those "freaky" cases of bad part out of the box?
5) wait for new DME ... and go from there, again

maybe it's a bad ground somewhere or something

If I remember correctly I believe another member had a bad ignition tumbler that caused a no start situation.
