Default What to look at when buying 1978 924 w/350K

Have an offer to buy a 924 that has sat garaged for the past 8 years. Am told the car ran the day it was parked and the current owner had 'just had enough" adn wanted something that required less time and money. He said the car needs interior restoration, paint (duh), and an engine re-seal.

Ok...still interested (says PORSCHE on the front badge remember). My question is: what do I need to look at / questions to ask before shelling out numerous Franklins for the car? Thanks in advance!

(Just hopeing the stable will grow a bit and can join the list of "multiple" Porsche owners.....Having fun yet?)

Forgot to ask. What do you think this car is worth. At this juncture I would think it is a parts car. Just looking for input. Thanks!!

Early 924's just are not worth much. The 944 is so much more of a car and can usually be had for the same money. As a parts car, there is just not many people looking for the parts. I would pass on the car unless you can pick it up for under $500 and just want to tinker.

I would pass unless it was a turbo or something kind of cool like a martini rossi one. Otherwise stay away from them.

There I highlighted your text with the 2 important pieces of info... third, it has not gotten ANY BETTER in the last 8 years...

When I decided to grow my "stable" I moved UP the ladder, not down it... I would look for a late offset 944, or 944 turbo... then prepare to never buy another car, because you will spend ever free penny buying WHEELS...

look for a maintenance history at the bare minimum.

i think any engine short of a diesel is due for a rebuild at 350k miles. it may make a good engine swap candidate.

I would agree with what everyone has said. I would avoid it unless you can buy for a really low price, i think even $500 is too much. Maybe if he gave it to you for free or like $100 to get it out of his garage it would be worth it. But your looking at a very old car, older style (924 vs 944 or 968) and 350k miles and sitting for 8 years, id say that engine is dead or near death, not to mention possible slew of electrical problems and/or problems with rubber parts like fuel lines and vac lines and hoses and such.

really it sounds too much of a hassle to pay anything for it. Just my personal opinion.

If you trace the 924 2.0 engine roots back far enough, the cast iron block started life as a stand alone diesel industrial power unit. Not kidding.

I bought a 78 924 from the second owner with 140k, will run on carb spray, once re-upholstered, maaco paint job, new brakes, struts, shocks and tires for $300. It is actually too nice to let go by. I figured it could be a cheap transportation car w/good fuel mileage or a car for my 10 yo son when he hits driving age. If you want to increase your fleet, I may be talked into parting with it.
