Post Turbo S spindles beefier than 87 spindles??

The Turbo S spindles are purported to be stronger than 87 spindles. My question is where's the beef?.... They both take the same bearings, so i assume the actual spindle size is the same.

I bought an 89 recently and moved my cool brake kit from my 86t to the 89. The spindles on the 89 were much larger and I had to enlarge the backing plate of the cooling kit to get them to fit over the spindles. I thought I read somewhere on the list that the change occurred with the 87 model year though.

It is my understanding that the 87-89 spindles are the same.
The 86 spindles are slightly smaller as evidenced by the different wheel bearings ...

Yes, M030 spindles are more sturdy than reg. ones. Here is how I understand it:

'86 spinles: Uses a hub unit that bolts to the rotor just like the 944NA (same part #?). The spindle itself was thae same as a NA

'87-'88 spindles: Uses the brake rotor as the hub and the spindle is redesigned (different part #) to take more stress and to accomidate ABS if optioned.

M030 spindles (Turbo S and '89 Turbo): Larger and provides the radial 3 1/2" bolt center that allows the S4 brakes or Big Reds to bolt on w/ out adapters. Pricey; usually $500 a set if and when you can find them, that's just the spindles.

Am I right here?
