Post Porsche will reintroduce 944 in 2005!

News: Autoweek magazine has shown a spy photo and article of upcoming "entry level porsche for 2005 model year" , to be introduced in sometime 2004.

It will sell for under $35k and code named "948".
It is a front engine, rear wheel drive coup, with either a (1.8 turbo) 4 cyl.engine currently used in vw jetta and audi a4, or the boxter flat 6. the 948 looks very similiar to that of current boxter/911, except it is a front engined car. 0-60 times are under 7 seconds and top speed around 135mph.

Also, porsche is developing a 928 replacement. The engine will be the same engine used in current porsche SUV.

Cool if true.

I'd prefer they use the 6, I'm underwhelmed by that VW/Audi 1.8T they're sticking in everything that moves...

dont have a scanner to scan the pic yet. it was actually a drawing. the nose and front looks very similiar to that of 911 and boxter but rear end resembles that of the old 968. to save costs, porsche evidently are using some parts from old 968 and current boxter, along with vw/audi parts such as tranny and 1.8 turbo.

on Audi TT this 1.8 make over 200 bhp.I suppose they will use the same floor board which will be used on new VW Golf introduced next year in europe. Most likely it will be built in Audi TT factory in Hungary or by Valmet Automotive in Finland, like most of the Boxters.

Red face

I can see it now--

948 owner: "Check out my cool new Porsche"
Boxter owner: "That's not a REAL Porsche..."

Uggg!

But seriously--The proposed 948 already sounds better than a Boxter!

Another Porsche car without a Porsche engine!!! @#$%^%$... you would think they would have learned with the 924 and the 914 (no flames please, I love both cars). But a Porsche should have a Porsche engine!!! How come they do not get it!!!!

A new 928 with the Cayenne engine, now, that is going to be nice.

Or use the current Boxster flat six so we can all see that engine!

AGREED!!!

And I'm not even a purist!

Why don't they just learn from the past and cut straight to the chase! Just chop the Cayenne V8 in half for pete's sake. What is this 1.8 l crap??? Seems to me they are starting over with 1977 all over again. That's just stupid, IMHO of course.

IMHO, the Audi TT sucks and if Porsche was to make something like that... yuck. For being a TT there sure isn't much power. 180 horses? Subaru is pulling more then that!!! And for the extra cash you can up it to a whopping 225 horses, and, according to the Audi website:

[quote] With vigorous pulling power, the 225 hp Roadster zips from 0 to 60 in a thrilling 6.7 seconds.

Come on. I don't know, I think making a $35k Porsche is an awesome idea, but make it a Porsche for crying outloud. They have a few years - put a little R&D into halfing the Cayenne's engine.

Just makes sense.

That 948 sounds gay. Why dont they make a Porsche that can actually compete with the old 951. top speed of 135? that's pathetic. I hope they make it a fast porsche like the old 951 used to be. And 1.8 L? I think that's too small. Just MHO.

a while ago I heard that they will be making a BOxster coupe for entry level. The 1.8 in the TT has plans to make over 300hp in the next few model years with a S model coming by 2004-2005. I drove a 1.8t Jetta and definately like that torque peak at 1800 rpm. I agree about trying to use Porsche engines though. Another 4 cylinder turbo would be great but it would have to come from Porsche and not VW to get respect. Porsche needs to understand that in order to sell cars in the 40k price range they need not be Vws and quit having that is it a true Porsche controversy, it is all about marketing a premium marque.

Matt,
Get a clue, the TT does not "suck" as you so maturely put it. 225 HP out of a 1.8 four is a fine accomplishment and with the emissions and fuel economy dictates that manufacturers live with it surprising they manage this much.

The car is a unique design very much NOT derivative like almost every other car on the market is nowadays. Case in point the new Cayenne. Just what the world needed, another SUV!

The TT is frankly intended for the same market niche that our 944 was intended for in the Eighties. Bashing it is almost like bashing our 944's. People back then were probably makibng all the same lame noises about "putting a real Porsche" i.e. flat six, engine in it, "it doesn't have enough horsepower", etc. The '44 nor the TT were intended to be the "fastest" sports car on the market. They were intended to be a spirited small sporty car for a particular niche and income level. For that matter, so is the Miata which is pretty much universally praised for it's overall performance and level of driving fun. If you just want HP, buy a Camaro.

Honestly guys I find this intersting.

I have 2001 VW GTI with the 1.8T Motor. That thing is really cool. Great power and economy from a small motor. And the best part is that since it is a trubo you can get big hp from. Locally I Know guy with an AUDI TT. Word on street is that he makeing 300 hp from it. Not to bad for a car the looks stock.

Personally I find the 1.8T motor to be one of the best motors made today.

Just Don't event think about making it front wheel drive.... and make sure the CG od the engine is behind the front suspension points and it has a rear transmission!!!!

Also keep the 948 at 2700 lbs curb weight....

Oh... for all you 951 guys... They can't make a new version of the 951... To good of a car. It would compete directly with and probably be better than the new Boxsters.. Can't have that.

Remember the 951 was also designed to replace the 911 of its day and it was really comperable to and in many ways better than the 911 Turbo at that time. Major Porsche Marketing bo-bo!

Some how a few 968 Turbo S sliped out before the factory stopped it, but they won't let it happen again.

Honestly the Boxster should replace the 996 as the Sporting flagship with 996 being more closely linked the GT car breeding of the 928. Of course the marketing folks don't want it that way so the Boxster S has to kept below the 996 in the performance ladder. So to will the new 948. It MUST be kept below the Boxster for Market reasons. Of course if they keep the weight down and use the flexible 1.8T motor the 948 can be made smoke a regular Boxster... but don't tell the factory that!!!

In no way take these comments as putting down the VW engine. I, for one, think it is a great engine with lots of potential, and a great aftermarket support, etc.

I was even thinking of getting a GTI as my daily driver. But my wife will not let me do a thing until the 951 is finished and outside the garage

But please do not put that engine in a Porsche...

I must confess more and more I am liking this puppy:
