I have had a really hard time finding a suitable U joint. The cost of ones that have the correct spline count are almost as much as if you purchase a new unit. But I am still looking.

I would definitely keep looking at VW stuff, specifically the generation of Jetta around 1980...I have a 1980 Jetta steering wheel in my car, so that end of the spline shaft worked.
IIRC the steering column of a 924/944 is taken from a Golf or something, and as I said before the splines of the 924 and 944 are the same size and count.

The Borgeson joints are a perfect fit, especially on the V8 install where the engine mount set-back plate can interfere with the factory square U-joint. The DD end makes removal a breeze as well. You just need 3/4" rod machined to the DD fitment....
I confirmed with a few hybriders that the MANUAL shaft is 9.25" between the factory U-joints.....

Same ones Arthropraxis posted.... they are 11/16"-40
I made mine from stainless but you can do 4140 steel as it is ALOT easier to machine....

1000's of miles on mine in the un-clocked position. Mine is extended over an inch as my X-member is dropped 1.25"
For the V8 swap kit I make, I extend the shaft only 1/2" but the X-member is spaced down 3/4" exactly. The angles dictate the shaft dimensions, but the Borgeson joints are adjustable with setscrews....love 'em. I clock them 10 degrees just like the factory....
