I find both of mine run better after a few shifts at 6k. I also let them idle for 10mins or so before i drive them.
One thing i would echo though, is about coming into the next gear. When i shift at 6 and come in the next gear at 3k+ or so, everything is smooth and wonderful like it was meant to be a perfect world.
If i come into any gear under 3k, it is not smooth and the engine bogs until it gets back up to 3k.
I dont always shift at 6, mostly 4.5 to 5k, and the main reason so that is so i can come back in at around 3k.
Once you get past 4k the car really starts to 'pull' way more than before, its fun, they put that redline there for a reason, dont be scared of it =)
When im driving around town im always thinking about that I cant drive 55 song...And i can;t get my car out of 2nd gear....dun dun dun...

I used to be afraid to get my motor over 4k. Then once I discovered shifting at redline that changed.
It really does pull noticeably harder once it gets past ~4000 rpms.
What you're doing is fine for daily driving but for god's sake rev the sh*t out of it every once and a while. Maybe on a nice weekend drive for fun or when you're having a bad day and you need some cheering up. It always works when I'm feeling down.
Don't think of it as "beating on it" so much as using it for it's intended use.

Thanks again for inputs, guys. Was excited to wind her up a little on the way home tonight. Saw 5K in the on-ramp, but traffic volume on the interstate dictated the flight was short-lived. Might be able to get her out for a good ride tomorrow, but winter returns to Colorado shortly thereafter...
Is it too early to start wishing for spring?

I have a 944S and I'm never below 2 grand...on leisurely acceleration I'm still winding it to 5k. I know I'm down on low end torque but I shift a lot to keep it in the power.
Also, with the short fifth and different ring and pinion in the S transmission I'm at 4 grand at just over 70! The car has 168,000 miles on it and it's got lots of life left--don't worry about your cruising RPM.

When driving on the streets gently I generally shift around 4,000. I seldom go over 5,000 on the street. On the track I generally shift at 6,000. I feel I am being conservative with these RPM's. At Laguna I am in the red in third gear between turns 4 & 5, with the turbo. I believe chips usually allow 7,000, mine included. When my NA was new the dealer said keep it below 5000 until the first service, (1000 Mi, +/-) then find the rev limiter "it won't hurt it". I have 46 track days between the two, 133,000 miles on the NA and 96,000 on the turbo. Neither have been apart and both are fine.
