Default Offer Advice

I am interested in making an offer on a 1986 944 but don't how much to open with. I love the color and the 5 speed trans.

Car is a museum piece with 11k miles.

Any advice?

museum pieces cant be pidgeon holed like most 944s.

If someone is looney enough to pay 25k then 25K is the value.

If you plan on driving the car the premium you pay will vanish very quickly.

Plan on 3k for maintenance if you plan on driving the car.

I say 17k if it is a museum piece plus 3k to get it driveable. The reason I tossed out 17k is because at 20k there are a lot of low mileage (say under 30k) cars that are "better" than the 951.

Again, if you want it for your museum then throw out my 20k total and go up to 25k, park it and look at it.

And as an aside, my co worker has a95 M3 with 10k miles. A museum piece too. a few years ago he figured it was worth about 17k for the same reason I just explained.

What color is it?

Lots of questions to be answered to help with a price. Could be $3500.. Could be $10K.

One concern with the low mileage is the amount of rubber items that need replacing due to age and ozone exposure.

If buying as an "investment" well.. 944's aren't there yet.. so it you have a place to store it for the next 20 years, maybe then you will see some value gains.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

It is a non turbo car. Also it is a 1989 not a 1986. (Ooops) I know the 1899 cars had a bigger engine.

The color is a blue/gray metallic. Interior is a very light bone color. I saw the car at a concours last year and it looked stunning. Took 1st place. I watched it being judged.

So is 10k a fair price?

Also what does a timing belt and water pump service typically cost?

Thanks again to all.

If its worth 10k to you, then it is! I would offer 7.5k just to get the ball rolling. depends on what they're thinking?

Timing belt and water pump and most "While you're in there" type stuff should be around 1500 bucks. so figure that into your cost upfront to get it down a little. Of course it depends on the shop but that seems to be the average around here.

1899!!! that one's a classic!!! double oops

imho, clutch would be of concern. Rubber centered disk. Fails both with age, mileage or a combination. My '87 had 35K miles on it when the original clutch failed 3 years ago. Clutch job, in "shop hours" is about 10hours. Long Island means $100/hr at least i would think.. so another potential $2K job. Not to say it will fail right away.. but I'd budget for it. Unless, as one mentioned, its just going to sit in your living room

10K is very fair imho. These cars only get older and more rare to find in "original" like condition.

OP call Sonny at SM Motorsports in New Hyde Park for a PPI, price quote etc. Make sure only Sonny or Pete touch your car.

Based on what I bought my 89 S2 with 52k miles for in 2004 with a few more options, and what i sold it to my brother for in 2006, and what I paid for my 90 S2 in 07 with 65k? and sold it for in 08 with 72k? with 030 konis, etc. I would say it is going to be a hard sell. What I paid, sold and would pay is irrelevant if someone else is willing to pay more.

What do you think it is worth?
