Dragon finishes VIR 24 hours - Chumpcar
so thursday we headed nine hours down to VIR for the 24 hour race w/ the guys at Chumpcar. Friday morning we set up camp and were able to run test laps on the south course a few hours and shake the car down. Temps were super high so the car was running at the 3/4 mark all weekend. Saturday was the start of the race and the car was running great. My first two hour stint was eventful on the south course as i missed an apex, oversteering into the side of a honda hatch and bouncing then off the quarter panel as well. Throughout the race we managed to get side swiped by a supra, hit in the rear and then bouncing of a few other cars w/ the right front fender as well. It seems that 86 cars on the track and a mix good and not so good drivers doesnt always work. The car stayed hot but ran the full 24 hours. Our battery didnt charge well during the night w/ the four large lights on the hood so it wouldnt start until we stopped running them, resulting in getting towed twice after stalling the car in off track occurrences. WE also had two of our new Dunlop Direzza star specs just come apart, one of our old hancooks get severely flat spotted and one that finished the race that is chorded half way around the tire. Time for more tires and a battery...and maybe some quick bodywork.

nice job. I did a 24hr race with chumpcar in April at The Streets of Willow. We had a great time. The only real trouble we had was breaking the shifter, had to finish the race in third gear, and the water pump sprung a leak. We came within eleven minutes of finishing the race when our 924 over heated. We ended up in fourth place as far as laps completed. http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/z...s/DSCN0579.jpg

yeah it was fun even though the 100 degree temps made it grueling. We only had us four drivers there this time so we pretty much all had to stay up 24 hours to keep everything going during the race. I did swap radiators and change some hoses after the fest and replaced the lower support w/ a straight one from my white car.

Congratulations on the finish. These cheap car races do tend to have quite a bit of bumping around. Cheap cars, limited skills, and lots of cars on track will do that. Glad you made it out ok.

Dan is way too modest. We came in 11th out of 86 entries, despite suffering:
1.) 3 flat tires in the first 7 hours (we had to run the final 17 hours on two tires that had over 30 hours of track time BEFORE we put them on)
2.) having to refill and bleed the cooling system 4 hours in (no idea where the missing coolant went – we had to add almost a gallon)
3.) having to replace a tie rod (Dan knocked that out in 10 minutes)
4.) stalling on course at 2:30am and 4:30am with no way to restart the car (that cost us about 35 minutes)
We also had no coolshirts (in 100 degree heat and humidity!!), no RV, and only four guys doing the driving and crewing. We had never even driven the full course before they set us loose on it at night. That the car stayed together for 24 hours of redline pranging abuse (twice now!), getting drilled in all four fenders, and who knows how many off track excursions (does anyone ever fess up to every spin or dropping of 2 wheels?) is an unbelievable testament to Dan’s skills and prep work.

Y'all have just enough time to comb through the maintenance list and make it down here to Circuit grand Bayou for next weekend's LeMons...
