Default bad p/s hose leak

i have a terrible power steering leak (on my 1985.5 944) coming from the rubber hose that connects to the rack. i think it is the return line? its the one that goes all the way across and up to the reservoir. seems like the longest line because it twists back and forth at the one point. but i was wondering how hard it is to remove this line or is it possible to fix it without removing it. the leak is coming from a slit in the rubber hose right at the point before it has a half circle curve in it and connects to the rack. i obviously cant drive it because it leaks the whole system within a few min of running. thanks for any help

I can't imagine it would be possible to fix it without removing it. Its not THAT hard to remove if you can get the banjo bolt holding it onto the rack out. There are a couple of bolts up inside the X-member that hold the clamps for the hard section of line.

Some have had success getting a local hose shop to redo the rubber parts. I didn't and replaced with OEM ($$).

Time to replace it, i'd get a new reservoir while your at it, there are filters in it and likely its pretty nasty. Flush the system and fill it with Dexron (Dexron 2 if you can find it). Watch out for dexron 2d, its thicker and wont boost as much.

Don't forget to use all new crush washers on the banjo bolts. If you try to reuse them after even one tightening they will leak.

Manually turn the head lights open and go in from the top thru that space.

++1

also, the OE lines are $$$, but I had all of my PS lines rebuilt by a local hydraulic shop for <$100.. and they're easily of higher quality than OE

i did that for the one on the passenger side of the car near the reservoir, im talking about the clamp closest to the drivers side and its up on top of the metal underneath the car. its a tight squeeze, but is that also accessible from the headlight area? it doesnt seem like it would be because its farther back
