fuel leak into hatch
i fill my tank, and while driving back home i smell an intense gas smell.
get home and look in the hatch and i saw puddles of gas (don't have carpet).
i peel back the fabric covering the tank access hole and i see that.
could it be that the 2.7 has a different pump (i had just recently swapped in a 2.7 into my 85.5 chassis)?

There's a thick gasket that goes under the fuel level sending unit. They're actually pretty cheap and in stock at the dealer (~$10) if you don't want to wait for shipping. Also, do you have the large rubber seal that goes under the fiberglass mat that you pulled off?

yeah, i have the large black piece.
thinking about it again, i'm wondering if it's not coming from somewhere higher.
it doesn't seem like it would be able to fill that gap and end up forming a puddles in the hatch.
it seems like it came from higher up and soaked into the mat and got down there.
i didn't take a picture of the entire hatch to show what i'm talking about.

Hmm did you have fumes into the hatch area when the car wasn't filled up GTS? Especially under cornering? Im trying to trace down some fumes in my car.. maybe i should fill it up all the way and see if it puddles like that.

Does it leak anytime the car is running (leak from a hose)? Clean it up and start the car (or run the fuel pump by jumping the DME Relay) and see if the gas starts pooling there again. Or do you have to be going around corners (gas getting out when its sloshing around in the tank)?
Any cracks in those hoses off the top of the sender (return line and vent)? If its coming from above (from the filler), look at the rubber seal on the gas cap. There is also a drain by the fuel door - tubing connects that drain down thru the inside of the fender and dumps out behind the wheel well. Make sure that isnt disconnected.

Not sure if cornering was the issue, though it might be possible that the goofy shape (just took mine out a couple months ago and it really is an awkward design) of the gas tank allows fumes/fuel past a bad seal if it all goes to one side during a left hand turn. You can pull the sender in just a couple minutes to check the gasket, just let the sender drain before pulling it all the way out.
Is the gas filler drain dripping into the right rear cubby area? It should be going through a hole to drip on the ground. While you're there, push the rubber drain (that's under the gas cap/filler) out from the rear cubby area. Take the whole tube out and run a wire coat hanger through it to clean.
Other than that, there really isn't anything else in the rear of the car to produce gas smell. The other connections for the filler are sealed off from the cabin.

i also found that this like was helpful. may not want to rule out all possible avenues, even though this writeup is for an early 944:

i would clean the gas off of the tank and ensure its as dry as you can get it. start the engine and watch for the gas to drip onto the tank. either from a line that has a tiny pin hole or crack, a loose or stretched clamp or from a faulty sender gasket. as others have said, the sender gasket seems to be the most likely suspect.

I had the cover off the filler neck a few weeks ago to replace the grommet between the body and the filler neck, everything looked ok but i still get vapor smells, they come in through the vent holes by the edge of the hatch, though not as intense as before i replaced the grommet. The line is hooked up but ill try clearing it. Im this close to just dropping the transaxle and tank to replace lines. No puddles or leaks are visible.

there's a hole on the top of the tank it's coming out of.
take a guess as to how it got there....
i picked up a used tank locally last night, took the current one out today and will hopefully be putting the new one in tomorrow.
