Default Cant remove shift lever from trans

After removing set screw from shift lever on transmission (87 944) I can not get the lever off the shaft. Will I need a small gear puller, I tried bracing the lever and tapping the shaft with a hammer.... cant get much backswing and you dont want to bugar the end of the shaft or its never coming off. Bought a short shift unit and want to install.

Did you try working the shaft? JK JK

Pull up the shift boot and disconnect the shifter from the connecting rod. With the shifter aside, pull the rod up as far as it will go into the interior. It should rise a good bit above the hole. Make sure to pull it upward and forward.

If you cant get enough leverage, stick a screwdriver through the hole and use it as leverage.
