What's the first thing t check when warning light comes on?
Here's the backdrop:
1991 944 S2 cab with 86K miles.
All fluids new and up to proper levels.
Car runs fine with no known issues.
All electrical appears to be fine.
I would imagine there is a sequence most pros go down troubleshooting the engine warning light coming on(?) Thanks guys.

I'm not familiar with the later models, but if it's the exclamation point in the center, I believe it will light up for more than just engine issues. Parking brake switch? Can't remember for sure, but I think that's one of the triggers.

If you are talking about the check engine light and not the central warning lamp you can, I think, read the codes like you can in a 968.

Note - this only works in the 1991 S2 and not the earlier models.
If you are talking about the central warning '!' light you need to figure out which other warning lamp bulb should be lit and maybe has had the bulb removed. This is often the air bag lamp. All these should light with Key On Engine Off so you can just look at what is lit and what isn't at that time.

Sorry, I should have clarified...it is the central warning lamp with the big exclamation point in the middle. I will try and track this down this weekend. Based on what has been suggested here, it would seem the warning lamp would indicate some issue not life threatening to the engine (at least so I can start it up if needed).

Make sure all your warning lights are in working order (putting the key on before starting).
For example, your ABS could be kaput, but the bulb is out or pulled from the cluster, and the big ! is on. So, make sure they all light up with the key on!
