Default Sparks shooting out of exhaust.....

So I got my turbo on the road again with most of the bad sounds and all the smells gone. I was going for a drive when a friend of mine with a WRX and I ripped the on ramp (ofcourse) He said that when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd sparks shot out of my exhaust . He didnt see if it did it again because by then I was too far away....

Doesnt sound to good... any one know what this might be?

Thanks.

might be dumping a lil more fuel than needed, but usually you get a flame from that not sparks.

what did you do to the car? did you replace anything in the head or exhaust?

is he sure it was in the exhaust and not something like the trans bottoming out on a bump?

If you are still running the factory cat it can be pieces of the cat flaking off and coming out the exhaust.

The car has 170,000 miles. I bought it in very poorly maintained condition.

I replaced spark plugs, ALL filters and fluids. (all of which were in terrible condition)
Oil cooler housing gasket ( The coolant basically was oil, it was really bad)
Put in a test pipe because the Cat was clogged (and this sounds better and boost rolls on way sooner)

It definitely wasn't bottoming out on anything. My car makes a weird noise when the exhaust is under load at 3000ish rpm. I though maybe wastegate opening and there is like a spring broken or something? sounds like a very fast click/tap for about 500rpm maybe the sparks came from that and he just thought it was the exhaust?

Im going to get a fuel system cleaning because there is probably a huge carbon build up and this might be making a valve click/ its a good thing to do anyway. It almost sounds like a tractor. I know these cars have loud lifters and injectors but this seems a bit too loud.

The sound it makes around 3000 sounds like it might be something that could be making sparks but the sparks happened when I shifted * what was at redline :P

This is what I thought of right away. It's probably pieces of carbon that are flaking off. They glow for a little while.

Probably carbon deposits or cat material.

Unburnt fuel catches light on the hot exhaust is the normal cause for flames. Over fuelling achieves it.
