87 Turbo with salvage title history
I'm looking at an '87 Turbo that looks and drives really good... What I do know. The car has an older repaint that still looks really good.
Very clean and very original (down to the stereo).
It has 90k miles (which matches with carfax)...
The Bad..
The first title shows 94, then it shows a salvage title in OH, then over a couple of years, it had a bunch of title/registrations entries (sometimes months apart). It ended up in MN with a salvage title (couple of entries that spread over months) and then ended up with a clean MN title. I see later on where somebody bought it and held on to it of the bulk of it's miles and then the current owner purchased it... The question is, how much of a discount should I ask for (assuming it checks out otherwise) because of the salvage title history... personally, I'm thinking 50% of where I was before I found this out...
thoughts?

Once a vehicle has a salvage title, that never goes away. It can be changed to 'rebuilt from salvage' but that will always be listed on the title. It's law. So if a current title says nothing about 'salvage'...run away because somethings not right.

I agree - run away unless you get it for nothing. Maintenance records? If its been handed about for years, nobody made a commitment to it and the maintenance was probably deferred. If you put any money in it you will never see it again (wait, this a a 944... oh right...).

FWIW my car carries a salvage title yet is my DD for the last 6 years.
No idea why, no accidents before I got it...best I can guess is PO didn't want to pay registration fees so salvaged/PNOd it

The good news is that from about 1999, it hasn't changed hands a bunch and at that time it had about 45k miles and now it has 90.... do about half it's life seems reasonable...
They don't want to come down on the price (I offered 5k)... So I guess I will keep looking....

If you like the car and can't tell if its had a major collision, I don't think its value has diminished all that greatly with a salvage title. The real value is in a good clutch, mods, and personal appeal. The difference in price between a very average 951 with 150K miles, and a really nice 90K mile version is less than a brake job on a new 911 Turbo S.
