Default What's the 'best value' S2 or 968 on the market right now?

Really looking for an S2 (or even a '68) if the condition/value equation is right. Have some time off next week to drive a car back if it isn't local.

MUST have:
manual transmission
well maintained + documented history (TB on time; recent clutch replacement a plus)

Preferences:
  • Handling aids such as LSD or coilovers
  • Sport seats or other bolstered seats
  • Colors other than Guards or Black
  • Open to both coupe and cabriolet

Example 1:
PROS: Low miles, all service records. new clutch, new top
CONS: Color

There are several nice looking ones on the wrong coast, but it might be a bridge too far this time. Like this, this and this

Would much rather buy from private individual, but this did catch my eye. Seems to be a consignment from the owner? Miles not listed tho and carfax shows same mileage from 2003 til next reading in 2010. Odo may be busted.

Any thoughts?

What do you want to do with the car? You can't track a cab, and you couldn't get sport suspension from the factory in a cab and sport seats and LSD's are pretty rare in coupes and extreamly rare in cabs. Cabs also weigh more.

I would say get a coupe. I've had a cab and it wasn't that good.

This would be a Fr-Sun driver. Cab would make those drives a bit more pleasurable when the weather's nice, OTOH a couple would leave open the possibility of more DE in the future.

our cars are getting old... if a 968 is in the mix, do everything you can to get one. take your time. talk to the 968 guys too on the 968 forum, and learn about the cars.... you mentioned about an LSD..... it's very hard to find a 968 with a limited slip differential.

as a matter of fact, don't be picky about options with the 968..... just get one with good service records, a 6 speed and a hard top, as they're becoming extinct and will hold their value better. they're also considerably lighter..... not having to deal with an aging top also means there will be much less to fuss with....

see post # 79.... good luck.

LSD is not a must, coilovers would be nice though.

Have an 90 S2 Cab 67K on the clock and I love driving it with the top down. Had a 944 turbo before the cab and I would not go back. As far as DE you are correct I will drive my VW GTI MKVI in the DE events.

Would not go back because you didn't like the lag or because you prefer the cab over coupe?
