Question Is anyone here from Athens, GA?

My girlfriend and I will be moving to Athens around June of this year. She will be attending UGA to get her PhD, so we will probably be living there for a few years.

I was just wondering if there are any 944 guys on here from this area! I know there are a lot from the Atlanta area, so thats good. It would be great to meet up with local 944 people and get to know all the good local roads, shops, car meets and shows, etc.

Also if anyone has any leads on a good home for rent in this area... holla!

Just a short drive to Road Atlanta There's a fairly active 944 group in ATL, you should have no problems finding others.

I drove through the other day if that counts (I was speeding too, don't tell anyone).

So, here's an update

We found a house, in the Southeast corner of Athens... it was pretty ironic that our realtor whom was showing us houses around town happen to have a pair of old BMW 2002's, as does my girlfriend! So that was kinda neat. Since I am a mechanic by trade, he said he could try to help me find some work at local German car shops and stuff.

Anyway, anyone else from up in this area? I know I saw at least 3 944's in the 3 days I was visiting the town!

Haha cool! Just in the 3 days I was visiting the town, I saw a black early 944 in a neighborhood down off Macon Hwy, a navy blue late 944 up in a neighborhood somewhere in the NW corner of town, and then a burgundy 944 with fuchs parked in downtown a couple blocks from the arches. 3 944's in 3 days is a great ratio! lol

I'm sure once I get settled in and acquainted with the town, I'll end up setting up a couple small 944 get togethers. I might need your help in discovering some of the local twisty roads and if there is any current car meets / clubs / shows / etc. around town to visit!

Ton's of 944/951/968 up in that part of Georgia. A couple near macon, where I live, but all in kinda bad shape. I wish I could help with some nice driving roads, but I don't know much about the roads in that area. I went up to Blue Ridge, Ga last fall, and Old Highway 2 looked like a lot of fun. Drove only a little bit of it, but it had some really nice and tight switchbacks.

If anything, you could plan a mountain run...and if you do, post up here on rennlist or send me an e-mail direct! I'd love to meet up with you guys!

hopps - Thanks for the info! Let me know if you see any shabby 944's down there for sale... Occasionally I like to scoop them up and either part them out or restore them.

And once I get something figured out up here I'll shoot you a message!

I don't live there (anymore - used to be in Atlanta), but a GREAT drive and not too far a trek from Athens can be found here:

http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/17...ches-Loop.html

It's known as the Georgia Dragon (like the Tail of the Dragon in NC/TN) and it's a great drive.

Be sure to stop at the hiking store where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road at Neel's Gap. A very cool spot!

Was up there Saturday.
And I think they actually raised the speed limit on one of my favorite parts (or I am imagining things)...

Most educated folks do hide when the subject of Athens comes up.

PS - Go Tech! ;-)

Reminds me of a great bumper sticker I saw while living in Atlanta:

"Have you kicked your DAWG today?"

I don't in any way condone kicking dogs, but that's funny!

Oh, and go Wolfpack!

Just drove it this week, as well as a Hwy 60 leading into the Suches loop. We were in Blue Ridge for the weekend, so it was a perfect time to check it out. In all honesty, Hwy 60 running though the Chattahoochee Forest is equal to, if not BETTER than the Suches loop. It has a really nice section of about 6 switchbacks, that you can fly through. The loop was a lot of fun too, though. One part of the loop has two lanes going one way, and if you go that way...Oh my gosh, it's fantastic! With no one on the roads, you can switch back and forth and take some amazingly tight corners. We did a total of about 120miles of driving. From Blue Ridge, down Hwy 60, around the loop and back. It was an amazing drive, the speed limits were exactly where they needed to be for the roads, and on a good day, there won't be any traffic. It was an almost perfect trip except for two things: People on bicycles, and my sisters bf toatling her car. Please, if you go there, BE VERY CAREFUL. He had a FWD car, came into a corner a bit too fast, lost the back end, straightened it up, and then the steering wheel snapped left and straight into a well placed dirt wall. Had it not been there, they wouldn't either.

Please, PLEASE, drive responsibly. Know your car, it's limits, and yours. I had no trouble with my (almost) stock 944. Tires weren't squealing at all, never lost the back end, had great control over all the corners, and I wasn't going easy on it. It's an absolute blast to drive, but I don't want anyone to get hurt. Luckily, they were fine, the airbags deployed and saved them. But please, drive safe everyone!
