Default WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR BLOCK OF PINEWOOD TODAY ...?

Built these with my 8 y.o. son for Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby. The Screaming Chicken in gold is his. Now we have to place the weights, shave the wheels, and doctor the axles.

I wouldn't race the red one until you do the belts

Good fun and well done!

POLISH the 'axles'...increasing grades of sandpaper until they are SMOOTH

narrow the contact patch of the tires...enough to make a difference, not enough to see...

Sunroof delete, that's a good weight reduction. I can tell that your mind is in race-mode.

since you have nice cutouts for the windows, get a nice chisel and pop out the black quarter windows. chip out a nice bit of the insides and fill with fishing weights. carefully re-glue the windows...

shave the insides of the wheels - wheel inertia goes down and weight can be compensated on the car, so car accelerates faster.

it could use a few layers of clearcoat, dont you think

It was white and modeled after my parents 924!

Thanks gents. River, I'd love to see the white Pinewood 924.

Mazdaverx, it's not a 951. It's a 944 n/a with a front nose update and a rear diffuser. So it's not as fast (but acceleration is more linear), and therefore I will have to take Spencer's advice to polish axles, cone the wheels, and add weight (contrary to Colin Chapman's directive "to increase speed, subtract weight").

Arash, which is it? Add weight or subtract weight?

Dirtyturbo, you can have them. I think they're BBS.

Greg & Hildegard: har har.

That IS a firebird logo, selected by my son, who is NOT sporting a mullet, so I don't know where he got the idea.

Oh and Spencer, clearcoat? Why? My full size one barely has one.

I'll definitely get some pics of my pd cars sometime...

About the wheels: they're OBVIOUSLY 924 turbo wheels... Painted black.

This is awesome. I cannot wait until my sons are old enough for Cub Scouts mostly just for this.

My pinewoods were never that cool growing up. Well done.

increase speed/subtract weight is applicable for cars going in corners and in straight lines under their own power - not going down a slanted gravity track

clearcoat would make it a little heavier

@Sentinel, and all you other kids and kids at heart, here's a video I made from my first Pinewood Derby Day last year. My son made a red, blue & green roadster and I made a yellow Ferrari Daytona Coupe. We didn't do so well in the E.T.s, but we had a great time.

It was held at a beachside house here in Honolulu, and it was truly a beautiful day. I can't wait for our second run at the checkered flag.

Well, I DO have a bunch of boxes from my growing up years literally sitting in front of me! LOL!

I wonder if I'll find it!

I remember it didn't place well, but won something for the looks.
