Default Thermostat Question

Seems to be the fashion here in Borinquen to drill holes in the 944 thermostats.
Anybody here seen this before?

Is it a Good Thing or not?

I wouldn't do it, you don't need to bypass the thermostat for any reason. It just makes the engine take longer to reach operating temps.

i dont think it gets hot enough over there to need any extra flow.

The justification seems to be that there will still be at least some flow should the thermostat fail in the closed position and this will avoid a meltdown.

People used do that so the system is easier to vent -- no air bubbles get trapped behind the closed thermostat when venting it cold. Might increase flow a tad (although the Wahler thermostats have a bigger hole/higher flow than some aftermarket versions) and may cause the water to reach temp a tad slower.

You think wrong.
Not only does it get infernally hot, especially on the southern part of the island, but the gridlocks are interminable and they are now everywhere.

This

It't supposed to make it easier to bleed air bubbles out.

Doesn't increasing flow increase engine/coolant temperature? I've always been taught that, reasoning being you want the coolant to flow through the radiator slowly to ensure maximum cooling.
