Default Shift rod removal

Hey everyone!

Quick question - has anyone ever tried removing the shift rod from an early car? I'm wondering what all may be involved. It seems as though I may need to drop the transmission and maybe go as far as removing the rear suspension.

After installing the 6 speed transmission, the shift rod seems to be about an inch too long. I took an inch off of the rear linkage, but my terrible work created a lot of shift slop. I got a new linkage and am thinking that the extra needs to be taken out of the rod instead.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

once the trans is out it is cake to do...with it in, can't really imagine it'd be that much worse

It should come out after the tranny is removed. when you reinstall it, watch the damage of the foam in the shifter area (console).

Yeah, that foam has been completely wrecked, lol. I think there are like 5-6 big chunks I end up removing and replacing each time I mess with it.
I would probably like to eventually replace it, but it looks like I would need to remove the torque tube to replace all of it. Maybe when I'm all finished I may try some foam-in-a-can to fill in the gaps.

Thanks!
