Default What to do first? 86 944

Just picked up this 86 944. What should I do first so it doesn't burn to the ground? It runs smooth, shifts nice, but needs lots of TLC. Tires go on tomorrow.

Timing belt is a big thing to check on these because if it breaks you can be spending some $$$$

In regards to specifically preventing it from burning to the ground, replace your fuel lines in the engine bay!

Rennbay makes a nice kit. Quite a few cars have been lost due to cracked fuel lines.

Don't forget the primary source of fires, the small fuel line that goes under the fuel damper. This thing has a tight curve and masks the cracks that cause the fires. As far as the rest of the car, do you see any indication of oil leaks around the bottom of the engine? If so, I'd recommend when you change the belts, that you replace all the rubber seals in the front of the engine. Reason? If one is leaking, all the rest are just as old and hard and will leak sooner than later and you'll have to disassemble the front of the motor,again, including the rear plastic belt cover to get at them. It's easier to take the time and do it right the first time. Also do a water pump if you don't have any history of when it was changed last (normally every other set of belts). Check the rollers while they're exposed. If they spin free and long or noisy, they're ready for replacement. Buy the belt and roller kit. With new belts, retension after about 1500 to 2000 miles. They'll loosen up some due to the teeth bedding into the gears.

1. Timing belt. At a bare minimum get it properly tensioned. It's best to get a new one in there.

2. Fuel lines (there was a recall about the little jumper hose. I think you might be able to get the dealer to do it free if it's never been done. Call them with your VIN)

3. Brake fluid flush. Use something good like Ate Super Blue or Ate Gold 200.

4. Get a spare DME relay. They are a known problem and you will look like a genius when your car dies and you casually pop the hood swap relays and drive off.

5. Clean it up, it's amazing what a good cleaning can do to even a "clean" car.

6. Drive it!
Seriously. These cars hate sitting and they are a blast to drive.

Alright so I looked at the fuel lines yesterday and they look like they've been replaced. They have heat shielding on them and the rubber looks much newer than some of the other hoses under the hood.

Whatever is stuck to the bottom of the hood is literally just falling off if you look at it and I'm worried that its going to cause issues...how do I get this stuff off?

And with the sunroof, the little tabs come up and push the roof up, but I can just push it open from the inside...it is just sitting on top of those tabs. Should it be connected? I also have some plastic clips that somehow go to the sunroof as well.

Open the hood, put a tarp or drop cloth over your engine, scrape the foam off and let it fall down on the drop cloth, throw the foam away, use some spray-on goo gone or something like that to get the adhesive off. Wash the surface with water after using any solvent.

Neither my 1990 944 S2 nor my 1977 924 had the insulation installed at the factory. I think the heat took its toll on the hood of the S2. The clear coat was starting to peal but only on the hood.

You can buy the hood insulation pre-cut at a number of online vendors.

Cool thanks Jackson!

I also have a red Brake light turned on the dash, and my handbrake does nothing. It looks like the nut on it is loose though so i'll tighten it up and see if I can get it to hold the car.

The brake light is for the handbrake being on. My guess is the little switch under the handle is stuck down if your handbrake is non-functional at the moment. The other light is the pad wear sensor, but I believe that light says "brake pad"
