So another question for y'all, how do you remove the upper and lower balance shaft pulleys? Ive used the tool arnnworx sells and also the 90* pliers (as van uses in his youtube videos) yet neither worked for me. The motor is out of the car as well. Am I missing something simple or is it just a pita to remove?

use the pin tool to hold the pulley still, and loosen the 17mm bolt. remove bolt, remove sheetmetal guard thing, pulley slides off shaft. dont lose the woodruff key.

alternatively for those without the pulley tool you can use an old balance belt and wrap it around the pulley and something sturdy and use that to hold it still. only 33 ftlb on the bolt so not too hard.

sometimes i'll have to get a small prybar or screwdriver to get them started sliding off- if you mean how to get the bolts out, i usually hit it with an impact gun and they spin right out. Worst case at the track ive held the pulley with a large channel lock and wrenched it out.

He has my pin tool to hold the pulley. You may have to try your neighbors impact.

Im tempted to try an impact on it. Yet will this work? Wouldn't it just spin the pulley? I also doubt this pulley was only torqued to the factory specs...

the trick here is preventing the gear from spinning. Find the right tool. And use more leverage. good luck.

90* pliers didnt work, tool from arnnworx didnt work, and oil filter wrench didnt work to hold the pulley... Got any new ideas for me?

You can allow the pin tool to lock against something in it's way, so you don't have to brace it. Are you doing this?

At one point there was a random piece of wood wedged between the tool holding the pulley and the AC bracket but that still didnt hold the tool in place.

you should be able to hold the pin tool with a hand and use an impact or breaker bar to break it loose. there is probably thread locker on the threads.

How about holding the pulley with a strap wrench, and then using an impact... Or heating with mapp gas torch (available at lowes) and holding with a chain wrench.. You will probbaly need a new oil seal after heating though.

Problem Solved

To anyone in the future who has this issue; Grab an impact (air) and hold the pulley with your hand then just let the impact do its job. Not a pleasant way to do this, but it works.

Now onto the next problem that arose (not related to this solution)
