What to do with a busted transmission?
On sunday the transmission in my 951 started to make a lot of noise, so I drained the fluid and discovered that there were tons of metal shards. So out comes the transmisison, in goes another one, and now I have the old transaxle sitting on my garage floor.
So the questions is, what to do with it?
- Garage art?
- Boat anchnor?
- Recycle it?
- Pull it apart for fun?
- Core value to someone?
It is a 160k, non LSD box, with oil cooler. I figure the oil cooler is worth saving, but the cost to repair a box seems to make this a throw away item.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I seem to recall that there is a small pump or gear inside the trans that recirculates the trans fluid thru the cooling loop. If so, that could be a saved part to sell with the cooling loop. Is the shift link white bushing any good on top of the Trans?

I want to at some point become a 944spec racer! I should hold on to it for that reason, I suppose.
M758, I plan on attending the NASA race at Firebird Saturday night to see what 944spec is all about, I'd like to meet some people to ask some questions.
I'll send you a PM.

M758, is your username a Porsche option abbreviation?
Take care!

Odds are there are some metal bit in the cooler, but I am sure that can be flushed out somehow.

I'm voting option #4, pull it apart for fun. Doing so would be a good way to learn more about your transmission. So, when yours goes you have at least a slightly better understanding of it all and even possibly the knowledge to rebuild it yourself.

I won't be at that event. There will however be at least 6 other 944 spec racers there. All of them are really good guys and would be happy to answer any questions you have. Look for the 944s as they should all be rather close together.

You cannot use a 944S/2/Turbo 5th gear in a 944 eight valve, normally aspirated car's transmission without modification (I assume this is what you mean by "spec racer".) The S/2/T gear is lubricated by oil fed into the end of the input shaft. The "normal" is lubricated by oil entering two bores in the 5th gear between the gear teeth and the syncro hub. Without lubrication, bad things happen. I had a client try this, didn't work. You can have a machine shop bore the hole and the groove on the inside.
Or you can just buy the correct short 5th gear set. I have 'em.
