you should go with the ''star'' look instead. That's what I did. It looks more vintage.
Thanks.

They had the center painted red, with several overlays of paint.
they also had some sidewalk rashes, so I had no choice to sand to repair them.
here is what I did:
1. The best stuff I found to remove the paint was some Aircraft Tal-Strip2 clear coat removal. That stuff is really strong, work with gloves. It's a gel, you apply it on the paint with a paint brush. Then put a wheel in a garbage bag for about 45 min. then powerwash it. The paint will go away. I had to do that about 2 times because of the amount of layers.
2. To remove the original wheel clear coat (on the entire wheel):
I sprayed the entire wheels with Easy-Off (oven cleaner). I putted them back a new garbage bag, and left them in the sun for about an hour.
When you open bag, your wheels will be all grey. Powerwash them.
3. Sanding: I did mine with some some 400grit. I bought some disks that I installed on my drill. I did all entire wheels with 400, then finished with 600 (grey 3m pad). I wanted some kind of a RSR finish.
4. Then I taped the wheels and did the star contour using electric tape.
5. Paint
They look pretty good, but I will buff them this winter to get a mirror effect.
Also, I will put a clear coat, because I spend my time shinning them with Mother's Aluminium paste each 2weeks. It's to much work.
Also, some chips are appearing where I painted the black, the clear coat will protect the paint at the same time.
So I do recommend a clear coat.
Here's some link that helped me with that <<big>> project:

as for the Easy-Off to remove the factory clear coat part, just make sure to keep an eye on it, as it may pit the aluminium if you leave it on too long.
It's really the best solution I found. I started with sanding all the way to 80 grit at the beginning, but it was way too tough. The easy-off really did a quick nice job.
